Visual Evidence Technician

Job Purpose:

To provide dedicated support ensuring investigative staff have access to appropriate equipment and exhibits are handled correctly and in a forensic manner. Support Visual Evidence investigations involving digital storage devices, enabling the unit to lead in forensic Visual Evidence Practice.

All activities will comply with the Quality Standards Framework (ISO 17020, ISO 17025, ILAC-G19, and the Forensic Science Regulators Codes of Practice and Conduct).

Knowledge and Experience:
  • Significant knowledge or experience in retrieving, processing, and producing evidential data in a digital forensic manner.
  • Understanding of Core Investigative Doctrine and MIRSAP procedures is desirable.
  • Ability to identify components within CCTV systems, VCRs, DVRs, etc., and a basic knowledge of computer network protocols and cloud-based CCTV systems.
  • Experience with forensic hardware and software tools relevant to the role.
  • Understanding of criminal investigation rules, the National Intelligence Model, Human Rights, and the Investigatory Powers Act (IPA).
  • Knowledge of the Criminal Procedure Investigation Act and Surveillance Camera Code of Practice.
  • Good knowledge of the criminal justice system and interpretation of P.A.C.E. (Code D).
  • Understanding of the Forensic Science Regulators Code of Practice (sections 84–86) and ILAC-G19 standards.
  • Ability to advise personnel and courts on identification and P.A.C.E. requirements.
  • High standards in written, verbal, and interpersonal communication.
  • Problem-solving skills and commitment to ongoing professional development.
  • Knowledge of forensic processes, health and safety standards such as COSHH, and accreditation requirements.
  • Proficiency in standard Force computer software packages.
  • Full driving licence, prepared for Police driver training, and completion of Personal Safety and First Aid qualifications.
  • Willingness to undertake training such as Loft Awareness for evidence retrieval at heights.
  • Ability to complete manual handling courses.

This role involves extensive travel across the Force and potential relocation to another laboratory location in line with staff policies.
