Job description

We are seeking an experienced Senior Structural Engineer on a freelance basis to support a range of highways infrastructure projects, with a strong emphasis on bridge design, assessment, and refurbishment. This is an exciting opportunity to work with a leading contractor delivering high-profile infrastructure projects across the UK.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead structural analysis and design of highways structures, particularly bridges.
  
• Conduct detailed Finite Element Analysis (FEA) using LUSAS software.
  
• Produce technical reports, drawings, and specifications in accordance with DMRB, Eurocodes, and relevant British Standards.
  
• Perform structural assessments of existing bridges and develop innovative strengthening and refurbishment solutions.
  
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including geotechnical, highway, and environmental specialists.
  
• Support junior engineers through technical mentoring and quality assurance.
  

Requirements:

• Chartered Engineer (CEng) status (or nearing chartership) with IStructE or ICE preferred.
  
• Extensive experience in the design and assessment of bridges and highways structures.
  
• Proficient in LUSAS and skilled in finite element modelling and interpretation of results.
  
• Strong understanding of UK highways standards and practices (e.g., DMRB, CS 454, CS 459).
  
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  
• Excellent technical writing and communication skills.
  

Desirable:

• Familiarity with other software packages (e.g., MIDAS Civil, SAP2000).
  
• Temporary works design experience.
