Dales Marine Services are a well-established and successful local and national Ship Repair, Fabrication and Engineering service provider for the off and on shore oil industry. Due to continued growth, expansion, and long-term contracts we are seeking an Electrical Engineer.

Job Description

The role of an Electrical Engineer is to plan, prepare and undertake electrical installation as well as relevant maintenance and repair projects to agreed timescales.

During their daily duties they would carry out routine electrical maintenance and repairs on vessels and at on and off-site locations, carrying out tasks such as installing, maintaining and repairing electrical plant, machinery, appliances and wiring. They would also assist with engineering maintenance and repairs on vessels, install, fit, assemble, and repair marine equipment, engines, mechanical plant and industrial equipment.

Job specific skills and requirements would include but not be limited to

  • examining drawings, specifications and wiring diagrams to determine the method and sequence of operations
  • install wiring and connections to sockets, plugs or terminals by crimping, soldering, brazing or bolting
  • cutting, bending and installing electrical conduit
  • installing electrical plant, machinery and other electrical fixtures and appliances such as fuse boxes, generators, light sockets etc
  • examining electrical plant or machinery, domestic appliances and other electrical assembly for faults using test equipment and replace worn parts and faulty wiring
  • connecting and disconnecting shore power for vessels in the dry dock
  • maintaining, inspecting, testing and servicing workshop tools such as handheld grinders
  • operating equipment such as drills, lathes, cylinder head service equipment, cylinder head cleaning equipment, chain blocks, overhead cranes, forklifts, MEWP
  • dismantling, cleaning and reassembly of engines, winches, valves, pumps etc. with various hand tools and equipment
  • drilling holes in frames and fabrication parts with drills and lathes
  • moving engine and mechanical parts into position for assembly using lifting equipment and overhead cranes and hoists
  • assembling mechanical parts and structures, usually by bolting
  • finishing off the assembly to required client standards

Responsibilities will include but not be limited to the following:

  • working to the highest expected standards at all times while carrying out work tasks,
  • report directly to the operations manager, trade foremen and site supervisors on the progress of work tasks,
  • working alongside and cooperating with specialists and sub-contractors depending on work task requirements,
  • mentoring and assisting in the training and development of all trade apprentices,
  • following all permit to work requirements,
  • following all site personal protective equipment/respiratory protective equipment requirements,
  • maintaining good customer relations,
  • ensure that all work areas are kept clean and tidy,
  • attending any required company and industry training courses,
  • following all company policies, procedures, emergency procedures, risk assessments and method statements,
  • assisting in the writing of specific risk assessment, method statements,
  • participating in work task toolbox talks,
  • attending time out for safety meetings to discuss any safety issues, changes to procedures or legislation etc.
  • ensuring that quality standards are met in accordance with company policies,
  • attending company occupation health checks and complying with any subsequent requirements of those checks,
  • following and promoting a safe working culture and the company ‘stop the job policy’ to ensure they and all fellow workers are aware of the companies safe working practices,
  • to help achieve the zero-accident rate objective by following, promoting and implementing company safe working practices,
  • to help achieve the zero waste to landfill objective by following, promoting and implementing company environmental policies
  • assisting in the implementation and upkeep of all company ISO standards

Experience

  • Ideally hold an NVQ/SVQ Level 3 or similar apprenticeship qualification, or equivalent trade experience in a similar position or industry

Electrical Engineers have a standard 39-hour week, but overtime and weekend work are often available. They can be working on vessels or in large workshops, indoors or outdoors in all weather conditions.

Their working environment can be noisy and hot, with some work being carried out at height on scaffolding or MEWP. Protective equipment such as boots, coveralls, hard hat, gloves, glasses/goggles and hearing protection can be required while carrying out their working duties.

They will assist in the implementation of the quality systems by following the Company Policies and Procedures and help to implement and maintain health, safety and environmental standards, working safely at all times to ensure the health and wellbeing of themselves and their fellow workers.
