Westinghouse UK provides Nuclear Fuel and Intermediate products to both National and International Customers. With recent changes in the global economy and a rising interest in Nuclear Power worldwide, our Springfields Preston site is experiencing unprecedented growth. The industry is expanding at a rate not seen since the inception of the nuclear age, presenting new challenges and opportunities for innovation and development of new products, while maintaining high standards for existing customer needs.

Our analytical Laboratories are integral to this process, offering Quality Control and Assurance testing for both internal and external clients, along with rapid process control analysis to support plant operations. To meet the increased production and development demands, we are expanding our laboratory capabilities.

As a Materials Laboratory Analyst, you will execute designated work packages to ensure safety and quality standards are met. Your responsibilities include providing technical and analytical services according to specified standards and timelines. A solid understanding of materials science and metallographic preparation techniques is essential. You will contribute to the development and validation of new methods, utilizing state-of-the-art instrumentation, and will be expected to uphold Quality Control Criteria and Good Laboratory Practice Standards. Adherence to safety procedures and maintaining a clean, safe work environment are paramount.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform preparation, testing, and examination of routine and AdHoc samples using various metallurgical techniques, including metallographic preparation of Stainless Steel and Zirconia specimens and microscopy techniques.
  • Calibrate and maintain laboratory equipment.
  • Utilize the LIMS system for result entry, authorization, and release.
  • Ensure work complies with the department’s UKAS accredited quality system (ISO 17025).
  • Participate in daily performance and safety meetings.
  • Follow good laboratory practices (GLP), local rules, and risk assessments to ensure a safe and tidy work environment.
  • Adhere to the Nuclear Safety Case and comply with all company procedures, policies, safety, and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications:

  • Essential skills:
    • HND or degree in a relevant scientific discipline (materials science preferred).
    • 2-5 years of laboratory experience with metallurgical expertise.
    • Accurate record-keeping of test procedures, protocols, and results.
    • Strong problem-solving skills to address testing issues.
    • Excellent communication skills for reporting and teamwork.
    • Commitment to delivering quality.
  • Desirable skills:
    • Knowledge of the nuclear fuel manufacturing process.
    • Experience handling radioactive materials.
    • Experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems.
    • Understanding of statistical analysis techniques.
    • Practical knowledge of laboratory quality control procedures, including control charts and proficiency testing.
