Job Description:

The Role

We seek to appoint a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Computer Science with significant competence in applications of artificial intelligence or machine learning. Applicants should have a track record of publications and academic achievement to complement the research in the School of Computer Science and Mathematics, and the ability to lead teaching and research in Computer Science and AI, broadly, including topics in natural language processing, computer vision or entrepreneurship in these areas.

Applicants should have the ability to motivate and support students in realising their potential and achieving competitive skills through creative, problem-centred approaches to learning, teaching and assessment. This is a career-defining opportunity and we seek to appoint someone who will extend the School’s research and teaching expertise, seeing projects through their entire lifecycle, from proposals to publications, thereby strengthening the culture in the School.

The Person

An effective communicator, you will hold a PhD in Computer Science or a closely-related area and an appropriate HE teaching qualification, such as FHEA. You will take a lead in learning and teaching and participate in the development of courses, from foundations to masters. You will make a strong contribution to the profile of the School through demonstrable excellence and leadership in research and teaching. Constantly seeking to improve, you will scrutinise your own work, build networks, and work collaboratively to enhance the faculty’s reputation. You will work with a team of talented lecturers to deliver vibrant, relevant education to your students, using a variety of technologies and approaches to develop their Future Skills.

The School is a close-knit group of academics with strengths in broad computing education, exemplified by its NCSC-recognised MSc, and research in AI, computer vision and machine learning. We offer high-quality courses focused on applied computer science, cybersecurity, games and digital media, reflecting the needs of business and industry. Our courses are strengthened by active collaborations with industry as well as educational and research partnerships. We combine innovative teaching, epitomised in our motto learning through making, with a strong research base, which this post will augment.

We are an Athena Swan silver award holder and are committed to providing a supportive working environment. We particularly encourage applications from candidates reflecting our diverse student cohort, please let us know if there is anything we can do to make this process better for you.

The Faculty

The Faculty of Engineering, Computing & the Environment (ECE) is among the most diverse in the UK, offering a wide range of subjects that encourage cross-discipline innovation. Our academics are experts, deeply engaged in research, which they bring into their teaching. Our state-of-the-art facilities include specialised labs, a public outreach centre, a virtual reality centre, a rocket lab, flight and race simulators, a renewable energy lab, automotive and mechanical labs and new labs dedicated to electrical, electronic, and robotic engineering, along with an advanced design studio. This combination creates an ideal environment for practical learning for future engineers, and an exciting atmosphere for academic professionals.

Please note that if you are NOT a passport holder of the country for the vacancy you might need a work permit. Check our Blog for more information.
