National Grid Electricity Distribution is seeking a DSO Engineer to help maintain and develop offline power system models, supporting strategic network planning and regulatory compliance.
The role offers hybrid working with initial training and opportunities to work across multiple NGED licence areas, applying Python, SQL and data analytics to improve modelling and automation workflows.
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a DSO Engineer within the Primary System Models and Data team in the Distribution System Operator (DSO). This role can be based at any of our main offices in Bristol, Cardiff, Castle Donington or Tipton.
The Primary System Models and Data team plays a critical role in enabling the transition to a smarter, more flexible electricity network. We are responsible for developing and maintaining National Grid Electricity Distribution's (NGED) offline power system models and analysis platforms covering the 132 kV to 11 kV network. Our work supports strategic network planning, operational decision-making, innovation and regulatory compliance through the application of advanced modelling, data analysis and software development techniques.
The successful candidate will join a highly skilled and collaborative team of engineers, data analysts and software developers working across all four NGED licence areas . This is an excellent opportunity to work at the forefront of distribution system operation, helping to shape the future of the electricity network while developing expertise in power systems, data analytics and engineering software solutions.
The successful candidate may initially be appointed on a lower salary until all relevant training is completed.
As part of our hybrid working approach this role offers a mix of office and home working. Hybrid working can only be considered once your initial training is complete and subject to business need.
You will be a self-motivated individual with a strong understanding of power system modelling principles and a genuine interest in using data, software and engineering analysis to solve complex network challenges. Experience of working with technical datasets and developing scripts, tools and automation solutions would be highly beneficial.
You will be able to communicate technical information clearly and effectively, with a structured and analytical approach to problem solving. Strong computer literacy, attention to detail and a commitment to data quality are essential. The successful candidate will embrace an automate-first mindset, seeking opportunities to improve efficiency and deliver lasting business value.
Experience of power system analysis software such as PSS®E, IPSA, Sincal or PowerFactory would be advantageous. Knowledge of scripting and programming languages, particularly Python, DPL or IPL, would also be highly desirable. In addition, experience of data interrogation, manipulation and analysis using SQL, Microsoft Access and Pandas would be beneficial.
You will be reliable, well organised and comfortable working within a geographically distributed team. Strong IT skills are essential, and experience of NGED systems such as Electric Office, EMU, ADMS, CROWN, Jira and GitLab would be advantageous, although full training will be provided where required.

Some roles require a triannual check.
