Job summary

Nuclearinst is seeking a Draughtsman for a 3-month contract based in Barrow or Carlisle. You will produce detailed 2D/3D fabrication and GA drawings using Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD, translating design intent into buildable drawings and ensuring revisions are controlled.

You'll work closely with design engineers and site teams, interpret sketches and specifications, maintain the drawing register, apply changes promptly, and ensure BS 8888/BS EN 1090 compliance.

Qualifications

• HNC/HND (or equivalent) in Mechanical/Structural Engineering.
• Experience producing detailed fabrication and GA drawings in a structural steelwork or engineering fabrication environment.
• Proficiency in Autodesk Inventor and/or AutoCAD.
• Sound understanding of BS 8888 drawing standards.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specs and sketches.
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy under time pressure.
• Good communication with engineers and site personnel.

Responsibilities

• Produce detailed 2D/3D fabrication, GA, and detail drawings using Inventor/AutoCAD per project specs.
• Interpret design sketches, calculations, and client specs to produce accurate, buildable drawings.
• Maintain drawing register with revision control and issue status.
• Incorporate design changes, mark-ups and redlines promptly and accurately.
• Work with production to capture design knowledge and apply LFE to new designs.
• Liaise with Design Engineers, Project Engineers, PMs and site teams to resolve queries.
• Ensure drawings comply with BS 8888 and BS EN 1090 standards.
• Check drawings for accuracy, completeness and dimensional correctness prior to issue.
• Support BOM generation and maintain CDE drawing files.
• Contribute to continuous improvement of drawing standards and templates.
• Carry out additional duties as required within skillset.

Responsible for producing accurate, detailed engineering drawings that support the delivery of projects. Working closely with the Design Engineers, and site teams, the role translates design intent and engineering calculations into clear, buildable drawings, ensuring drawings are technically correct, produced to programme, and issued to the correct revision and standard. The role ensures that all activities are carried out in accordance with relevant health, safety, and environmental standards and in line with our customers' and clients' regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

• Produce detailed 2D/3D fabrication, general arrangement (GA), and detail drawings using Autodesk Inventor/AutoCAD in line with project specifications
• Interpret design engineer sketches, calculations, and client specifications to produce accurate, buildable drawings
• Maintain and update the drawing register, ensuring accurate revision control and issue status
• Incorporate design changes, mark-ups, and redlines promptly and accurately
• Work closely with other departments such as production to capture knowledge relating to design activity and apply LFE to new designs.
• Liaise with Design Engineers, Project Engineers, Project Managers and site teams to resolve queries and clarify design intent
• Ensure drawings comply with relevant standards (e.g. BS 8888, BS EN 1090)
• Check drawings for accuracy, completeness, and dimensional correctness prior to issue
• Support the production of material take-offs and bills of materials from drawingsMaintain drawing files and documentation within the project Common Data Environment (CDE)
• Contribute to continuous improvement of drawing standards, templates, and best practice within the drawing office
• Carry out other duties as required, commensurate with skills, knowledge, and experience.
• Carry out any other task within skillset

Essential Experience, Skills & Qualifications:

• HNC/HND (or equivalent) in Mechanical/Structural Engineering, or a recognised engineering draughting apprenticeship
• Proven experience producing detailed fabrication and GA drawings within a structural steelwork or engineering fabrication environment
• Proficiency in Autodesk Inventor and/or AutoCAD
• Sound understanding of engineering drawing standards and conventions (e.g. BS 8888)
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and design sketches
• Good attention to detail and accuracy under time pressure
• Strong communication skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with engineers and site personnel

Desirable Experience, Skills, and Qualifications

• Familiarity with Autodesk Vault or similar document/drawing management systems
• Experience in Pipework design, eg ASME B31. Experience in the structural steelwork, nuclear or defence sectors
• Experience in process engineering
• Working knowledge of LOLER, PUWER, and CDM Regulations as they relate to design output
