JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Teacher - Post-Primary

REPORTS TO: Principal

Professional Duties of a Teacher
Regulations

(Northern Ireland) 1987, Schedule 3, Regulation 5

  1. Exercise of general professional duties
  2. A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out professional duties as circumstances may require, including:
  • (a) under the reasonable direction of the principal of the school where employed;
  • (b) if employed by a board without a specific school assignment, under the reasonable direction of the board and the principal of any school where required to work.
  1. Exercise of particular duties
  2. Teachers shall perform duties reasonably assigned by the principal or the employing authority, including:
  • (a) in accordance with directions from the principal;
  • (b) in accordance with directions from the board or the principal of any school where they work.
Specific Responsibilities
  1. Planning
  2. Planning and preparing courses and lessons;
  3. Teaching according to pupils' educational needs, including setting and marking work;
  4. Assessing, recording, and reporting on pupils' development and progress.
  1. General
  2. Promoting the progress and well-being of pupils;
  3. Providing advice and guidance on educational, social, and career matters;
  4. Making records and reports on pupils' personal and social needs;
  5. Communicating with parents and external bodies;
  6. Participating in meetings related to these activities.
  1. Assessment/Reporting
  2. Providing assessments, reports, and references for pupils, respecting confidentiality.
  1. Staff Development
  2. Participating in staff development schemes;
  3. Reviewing and developing teaching methods and materials;
  4. Advising on course development and assessment methods.
  1. Discipline/Health and Safety
  2. Maintaining good order and discipline, safeguarding health and safety;
  3. Participating in school meetings related to curriculum, organization, or pastoral care.
  1. Public Examinations
  2. Participating in preparing pupils for public exams, assessing, and supervising during exams.
  1. Management and Administration
  2. Contributing to staff appointments and development;
  3. Managing or coordinating work of other teachers;
  4. Participating in curriculum and organizational development;
  5. Handling administrative tasks, including support staff supervision and resource management.
  1. Working Hours and Days
  2. Availability for 195 days per year, with specific weekly hours and breaks outlined;
  3. May be required to work at specified times and places, including supervision duties.
  1. Staff Cover
  2. Providing cover for absent teachers under specified conditions.
