Job summary

GlaxoSmithKline plc is seeking a Director of Data & Data Science, Development Data, to own strategy, organization, and delivery across R&D data. You will lead a portfolio of data categories, guide investment decisions, and set governance standards while remaining hands-on for coding and model evaluation.

You will shape the data science and AI agenda, manage budgets, and partner with senior leaders to unlock high-value opportunities, ensuring data quality and compliance across R&D data assets.

Qualifications

• Experience leading a data, analytics, or data science org in a regulated environment.
• Experience leading leaders (e.g., product owners, engineering managers) with broad scope.
• Track record of multi-year data and data science strategy with senior stakeholder support.
• Hands-on ability to write code, perform analysis, build and evaluate models, and develop agentic AI systems.

Responsibilities

• Define a multi-year R&D data and data science strategy and translate it into a focused roadmap across R&D Data Categories.
• Lead the R&D Data Category portfolio with clear ownership, a healthy roadmap, and measurable value.
• Direct investment and priorities, balancing engineering, data science, platform capacity, governance, and innovation.
• Build and develop the TDPO organization with hiring, org design, and career development.
• Champion engineering and data science excellence with standards and communities of practice.
• Safeguard data governance, privacy, and audit readiness across R&D data.
• Set the data science and AI agenda in partnership with senior scientific leaders.
• Create and scale agentic AI data science initiatives with human oversight.
• Steward technology, funding, and partnerships—shape architecture, budgets, and supplier relationships.
• Be the voice of the function, communicating portfolio health to senior leaders.
