Job summary

East Riding of Yorkshire Council is seeking a Direct Payment Worker to support a 16-year-old male in Driffield. This is an external vacancy with 20 hours per week on an ad hoc basis, with additional hours during school holidays.

Job description

This is an external vacancy and is not employment with East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

20 hours on an ad hoc basis with extra hours available during school holidays.

About the recipient

The individual is male, 16 years old and resides in Driffield. They require a dedicated and suitable person to support them due to having autism, AHD, severe learning disability and suffer with severe migraines. The young person is non-verbal. The role requires short notice availability due to the needs of the young person.

They are affectionate and animated enjoying active activities such as trampolining and enjoys nature and being outside on walks or long drives which help settle and soothe them during a migraine episode.

This young person can display challenging behaviour at times and becomes unsettled especially when they are experiencing migraines. Due to this, applicants would need to comfortable with managing such behaviours, these are very rare in the car.

The applicant will need to have experience of SEN and will have to be 25 years of age with a clean license to use the provided vehicle for this young person. The applicant will also have to be comfortable with a more short notice approach to shifts. The individual will also have to be comfortable with personal care needs.

About the role

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Assisting with personal care.
  • Assisting the individual with accessing activities and spending time out in the community.
  • Attending/transporting the individual to social activities.
  • Encouraging social interaction and inclusion and providing emotional support.
  • Settling and supporting the individual.
  • Keeping them safe in the community.
  • Helping to fulfil their potential and aspirations.

About the candidate

The suitable candidate must:

  • Be motivated, proactive and able to work on their own initiative.
  • Be patient, caring and understanding.
  • Have good communication skills (clear and effective communication).
  • Be able to build a positive relationship with the individual to both encourage and support them.
  • Have previous experience supporting an individual with additional needs.
  • Be flexible to meet the needs of the family.
  • Be flexible to accommodate the hours of work where necessary.
  • Be a team player and able to work effectively alongside another worker.
  • Must have use of own car, to transport individual to social activities.

DBS/Reference checks will be required for this post – Cost to be met by the local authority.

Children and Young People, Specialist Services Direct Payments is an in-house service provided by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council to support families of Children and Young People with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities to fulfil their potential and aspirations.

Whilst caring experience is always useful, you don’t necessarily need to have worked in care to be a great Direct Payment Worker, the right attitude and a person‑centred approach is more important.

Some travel across East Riding of Yorkshire may be required, applicants must be able to transport themselves.
