Job description

The Office of Mariana Mazzucato at the UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose is seeking a Digital Engagement Assistant to support the Digital Media and Events Manager in maintaining the digital presence and external engagement of Professor Mariana Mazzucato.

This role is responsible for coordinating social media content across multiple platforms, managing and updating the Director's website and Substack newsletter, supporting event coordination and promotion, and ensuring the Director's online profile remains current and strategically aligned with her policy work and public engagement.

The role requires strong communications skills, an understanding of and interest in economics and public policy, and the ability to translate complex academic and policy content into compelling digital communications for diverse audiences.

The post holder will work closely with the Digital Media and Events Manager to develop and execute digital engagement strategies that amplify the Director's research, policy advisory work, and public voice. The post holder must be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment where priorities evolve in real time, in response to current affairs, policy developments, and the Director's extensive international engagements.

About the role

Digital Content and Social Media Management:

  • Work closely with the Digital Media and Events Manager to develop and implement content strategies for the Director's digital channels (X, Bluesky, LinkedIn, and emerging platforms).
  • Lead the coordination of weekly social media plans by working closely with content leads across the Mariana team and the IIPP comms team, ensuring alignment, consistency, and oversight across content schedules.
  • Monitor the Director's online channels, curate relevant content for sharing, and maintain an active and strategically aligned social media presence.
  • Edit and refine social media content to ensure clarity, impact, and alignment with the Director's voice and messaging priorities.
  • Populate and maintain the Director's media library of official photos, videos, and multimedia assets, serving as the primary point of contact for team access to these materials.
  • Use design tools (e.g. InDesign, Adobe Suite, video editing software) to create visual assets for social media, events, and campaigns.
  • Support the development and implementation of video content strategies across platforms including YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok.

Website and Online Profile Management:

  • Coordinate updates to the Director's Substack newsletter platform, including formatting, publishing, and maintenance.
  • Monitor and update the Director's online profiles across professional platforms such as Google Scholar and speaking databases.
  • Engage with stakeholders to ensure consistency across wider online presence.
  • Ensure consistency of biographical information, publications lists, media appearances, and other profile content across all digital platforms.

Event Support and Promotion:

  • Support the coordination of events involving the Director, including book launches, lectures, panel discussions, conferences, and other public engagements.
  • Create promotional content for events across digital channels, ensuring appropriate visibility and engagement.
  • Assist in preparing event materials, presentations, and digital assets for the Director's speaking engagements.
  • Coordinate post-event content including photos, video clips, key quotes, and social media recaps.
  • Liaise with event organisers, communications teams, and other stakeholders to ensure smooth coordination of event-related communications.

Communications Projects and Editorial Support:

  • Undertake ad-hoc communications projects as directed by the Digital Media and Events Manager (e.g., video campaigns, explainer series, project-specific promotional content, collaborations with IIPP Communications team or Bartlett communications).
  • Provide editorial support for external communications, including proofreading and copy-editing content for accuracy, clarity, and tone.
  • Draft communications materials on behalf of the Director when required, including social media posts, website updates, and other digital content.
  • Monitor media coverage and policy developments relevant to the Director's work, flagging opportunities for engagement or response.

General Support:

  • Maintain the Director's contact database, ensuring records remain up-to-date and well-organized.
  • Develop and maintain an understanding of the Director's portfolio of policy work, research themes, and strategic priorities.
  • Work collaboratively with the Digital Media and Events Manager and the wider team, providing coverage during absences as needed.
  • Due to the nature of the role, the post holder may occasionally be required to work evenings/weekends to support events or time-sensitive communications needs.
