Job summary

NEXT plc invites applications for a 12-month technology placement in Pontefract. You will gain hands-on experience across full life-cycle development while shadowing a supportive team of Developers, Product Development Managers, and Analysts. The placement runs from July 2027 to July 2028.

You will work with C#, .NET, Vue.js, HTML and CSS, writing readable code and collaborating to resolve issues. A STEM degree with a placement year is required, with a 2:1 or higher preferred.

Responsibilities

• Shadow experienced Developers to learn full life-cycle development.

• Implement, test, and deploy code changes following the development process.

The role

Technology drives what we do at NEXT, and as a Tech Placement, you will be a vital part of our evolution. This role is designed to help you learn and grow by giving you hands‑on experience in full life‑cycle development.

You will make a real difference by contributing to team objectives and helping to create and enhance new and existing systems. Working alongside and shadowing a supportive team of experienced Developers, Product Development Managers, Business Analysts, and Architects, you will receive the guidance you need to succeed.

This is a 12-month industrial placement and applicants must be studying a relevant University Degree course that includes a dedicated placement year July 2027 to July 2028.

What you'll take on

• Shadow our experienced Developers to learn about and participate in full life‑cycle development.
• Help create and enhance applications using a wide variety of backend and front‑end technologies, including C#, .NET, VUE.JS, HTML, and CSS.
• Write readable and maintainable code that fulfils user requirements to agreed quality standards.
• Collaborate closely within your team to troubleshoot, identify, and resolve bugs in the codebase.
• Implement, test, and deploy code changes following the company's development process.
• Participate actively in daily stand‑ups, sprint planning, and code reviews to discuss challenges and share your progress.
• Adapt to and utilise new AI technologies, such as CoPilot, Gemini, and Notebook LM, to streamline your ways of working and increase efficiencies.

What you'll bring

• Current study towards a STEM degree (on track for a 2:1 or higher) or a STEM Master's degree that includes a 12-month placement, ideally with relevant studies in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a similar field.
• We are looking for someone with a strong interest in how software works and a self‑motivated desire to learn.
• You will bring a basic understanding of core languages like C#, VB.NET, VUE.JS, HTML, CSS, and Javascript, alongside the ability to adapt quickly to new technologies.
• Beyond your technical potential, you will need to be a great communicator who listens well, thinks in a structured manner, and collaborates effortlessly with others.
