Job summary

Project Freelance seeks a Design Manager to lead the delivery of high‑voltage substation design for UK National Grid projects (275kV/400kV). You will manage multidisciplinary teams across FEED to construction support, ensuring safety, quality and programme adherence while coordinating with National Grid stakeholders and discipline leads.

Lead design reviews, manage budgets and resources, and mentor engineers through lifecycle from concept to close‑out.

Qualifications

• Proven experience leading design delivery on high‑voltage transmission projects.
• Strong background in National Grid substation schemes and governance.
• Experience coordinating multidisciplinary engineering teams.

Responsibilities

• Lead multidisciplinary engineering design delivery on National Grid transmission projects.
• Manage project schedules, budgets, resources and risk registers.
• Coordinate design activities across Primary, P&C, Civil and related disciplines.
• Act as main client interface for design matters and chair design reviews.
• Ensure compliance with national standards and procedures; drive Safety by Design.
