Job summary

Carmichael UK is seeking a Design Engineering Manager to lead design and engineering activities on the project, ensuring scope and programme alignment, budget adherence, and safe, compliant design outcomes. You will coordinate with construction and operation teams to deliver robust design solutions.

The role requires oversight of design reviews, interface with clients and external parties, and leadership of engineering teams to meet project milestones and quality standards.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure through their engineering teams that all engineering process and procedures are implemented.
  • Ensure project procedures and processes (particularly engineering) are implemented throughout design.
  • Promote the latest engineering developments, technology, innovations, methods and best practice in permanent and temporary works ensuring they are considered, developed, communicated and implemented both at bid stage and during construction.
  • Manage the TQ/RFI/NCR process, ensuring resolution and communication of all design queries at pace.
  • Prepare and manage the design deliverables schedule - delivery on time and in budget.
  • Collaborative design planning and input into construction programmes.
  • Manage communication with the Client design representative throughout the contract period.
  • Produce weekly design progress reports and monthly project reports
  • Quality Assurance of all design deliverables and coordination with document control.
  • Manage and chair design reviews with project team.
  • Manage and chair design interface meetings with Client and external parties.
  • Review designs for compliance with contract requirements and tender intentions.
  • Ensure compliance with design approval processes required by the contract.
  • Collaborate with the selection and engagement of external suppliers/subcontractors.
  • Manage provision of models and drawings to project team in accordance with document control procedures.
  • Manage design change procedures ensuring adherence to the Contract and ensuring avoidance of unintended consequences.
  • Commercial management of designers in collaboration with the commercial team.
  • Approve designer’s quality management system
  • Lead Design Reviews with approval and acceptance bodies

Purpose of the Role

To manage design and engineering activities and deliverables to ensure they are completed in line with the agreed scope and programme with the following key objectives.

  • Completion of design on time and within budget including successful completion of design reviews, stage gates, construction reviews and hazard/risk reduction procedures.
  • To provide technical support on the project.
  • To ensure health, safety, welfare, environment, quality are considered as a core function of design at all stages, decisions and outcomes clearly communicated to construction and operation teams.
