Laing O'Rourke is currently recruiting Design Managers and Senior Design Managers with experience in Healthcare projects from an Electrical background for our Healthcare portfolio. We are recruiting for the Monklands Replacement Project in Scotland, Calderdale Royal Infirmary based from Sale, and Brighton 3T's.

The Opportunity:

This Senior Design Manager will lead the delivery of effective design across this large-scale project. They will focus on leading the pre-construction phase design processes, liaising with the client, design team, in-house bid team, and operations team. On live projects, they will implement processes that enable collaborative design review and risk reduction.

This role is a senior member of the Design Job Family and Technical Function, ensuring technical excellence, assurance, and performance across projects, from pre-project engagement to detailed delivery. All designers are part of our Engineering Enterprise, aimed at maximizing design potential to increase project certainty.

What will the role look like?

  • Leading the pre-construction phase briefing and design processes.
  • Managing LOR's design management procedures, linking commercial, construction, and design teams throughout the project.
  • Implementing processes for challenging and interrogating designs collaboratively.
  • Managing the production, control, and distribution of design information at various stages.
  • Reporting on design progress regularly.
  • Reviewing design information for buildability, safety, maintainability, compliance, and technical suitability.
  • Promoting innovation in design management, methodology, and practices.
  • Supporting the Design Leader in promoting company vision and values in design activities.

What skills & experience are we looking for?

  • End-to-end management of design from concept to handover.
  • A first degree in Electrical Engineering or relevant construction-related qualification, plus design experience.
  • Specialist experience in managing the design of construction or building services projects.
