Job summary

Contek Recruitment Solutions is partnering with an established engineering business to recruit a Mechanical Design Engineer in Sutton-in-Ashfield. You will produce detailed drawings and 3D models, support manufacturing and installation, and work with production and installation teams to ensure designs are practical and cost-effective.

The ideal candidate has proven mechanical design experience, strong CAD skills (Autodesk Inventor), and the ability to create BOMs and manufacturing drawings.

Qualifications

• Previous experience as Mechanical Design Engineer or similar role.
• Strong CAD skills, preferably Autodesk Inventor.
• Ability to create and interpret detailed engineering drawings for manufacture.
• Understanding of welding, fabrication and assembly processes.
• Experience compiling BOMs, cutting sheets and design documentation.
• Ability to interpret engineering drawings and material requirements accurately.
• Experience performing engineering calculations and supporting design decisions.
• Familiarity with QA procedures and document control.
• Excellent communication across design, production, installation and management teams.
• Good organisational skills and attention to detail; practical, problem-solving mindset.

The Opportunity

Contek Recruitment Solutions is representing an established engineering business in its search for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join its design team. With approximately 102 employees, our client delivers bespoke engineering projects across a diverse range of sectors, including airports, ports and sports ground facilities. Operating as a full turnkey provider, the business manages projects from initial design and manufacture through to installation.

Based at a large manufacturing facility incorporating welding, fabrication and assembly, this is an excellent opportunity to join a business where design engineers work closely with production and installation teams to ensure designs are practical, accurate and suitable for manufacture.

The Role

As Mechanical Design Engineer, you will be responsible for producing detailed engineering designs and manufacturing drawings, maintaining accurate technical documentation and supporting projects through design, production and installation. Key responsibilities will include:

• Producing detailed engineering drawings for the manufacture of bespoke and newly designed products, including product derivatives.
• Creating and modifying 3D models and engineering drawings using Autodesk Inventor.
• Preparing bills of materials (BOMs) and cutting sheets for existing and newly designed products, maintaining accurate records.
• Liaising with Production and Installation departments to ensure designs are practical, manufacturable and aligned with best working practices.
• Carrying out engineering calculations as required during the preparation of designs and technical drawings.
• Modifying and updating drawings, calculations and BOMs to reflect design changes and revised project requirements.
• Carrying out site surveys, attending site meetings when required and producing technical reports.
• Issuing technical drawings and maintaining documentation in accordance with the company's Quality Assurance Scheme (QAS).
• Reviewing and interpreting engineering drawings and specifications to establish material requirements accurately.
• Analysing technical drawings to support material selection, cost estimates and manufacturing requirements.
• Working closely with managers, supervisors, production staff and installation teams to resolve technical queries and support project delivery.
• Ensuring design work is completed accurately and in line with project timescales, budgets and quality requirements.
• Providing technical support throughout the manufacturing and installation process, helping ensure projects progress efficiently from design through to completion.

The Ideal Candidate

• Previous experience in a Mechanical Design Engineer or similar mechanical design role.
• Experience using 3D CAD software, ideally Autodesk Inventor.
• The ability to produce detailed engineering and manufacturing drawings for bespoke products.
• An understanding of manufacturing processes, particularly welding, fabrication and assembly.
• Experience compiling BOMs, cutting sheets and associated technical documentation.
• The ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications and material requirements accurately.
• Experience carrying out engineering calculations and supporting technical design decisions.
• An understanding of quality assurance procedures and document control.
• Strong communication skills, with the ability to liaise effectively across design, production, installation and management teams.
• Good organisational skills, attention to detail and the ability to manage competing priorities.
• A practical, problem-solving approach, with a focus on producing designs that can be manufactured and installed efficiently.

Working Hours

• Monday to Thursday: 7:30am–4:15pm.
• Friday: 12:00pm finish.
• Flexibility is available around start and finish times, with arrangements such as 7:00am–3:00pm possible.
