About the Role
An excellent opportunity exists for a proactive and detail-oriented Design Engineer to join a specialist team focused on Electrical Transmission & Gas Transmission Sites across the UK mainland. This role is pivotal in delivering high-quality, compliant designs from concept to completion.
You will be responsible for producing detailed electrical and security designs (LV & ELV) that meet rigorous legislative, customer, and technical standards. The position offers a "cradle to grave" project involvement, from initial site survey through to handover, providing significant variety and technical challenge. This is a fantastic opportunity to work on critical national infrastructure within a supportive and forward-thinking team.
Key Responsibilities (including but not limited to):
- Carry out site surveys on Electrical Transmission & Gas Transmission sites across the UK.
- Produce detailed electrical and security system designs (LV & ELV) in line with all relevant standards and specifications.
- Develop concept and detailed design packages for both internal and external review.
- Follow your designs through to 3rd party approval, construction, commissioning, and project handover.
- Produce essential technical documentation, including block diagrams, single line diagrams, wiring schematics, and cable/load/material schedules.
- Proactively manage design change control and identify project risks, devising contingency plans.
- Attend and contribute to HAZID/HAZCON and Design Assurance & Review meetings.
- Collaborate effectively with the Design, Construction, and Project Management teams, as well as P6 Planners.
- Mentor and develop new and existing engineers within the team.
- Ensure all company management systems and processes are adhered to.
Requirements
- Proven experience as a Design Engineer, ideally within the power transmission, utilities, or critical infrastructure sectors.
- Proficient in Amtech (or ElectricalOM) and AutoCAD.
- Experience designing Low Voltage (LV) and Extra Low Voltage (ELV) AC systems, AC UPS, and DC systems.
- Experience designing security systems such as Door Access, CCTV, and Power Fence.
- Ability to create 2D drawings (General Arrangement/Site Layouts) and ideally 3D BIM/Revit models.
- Demonstrable ability to produce detailed technical schedules (Cable, Load, Material, Equipment).
- Excellent communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Full, valid UK driving licence with a willingness to travel to sites across the UK mainland.
Desirable Skills & Qualifications:
- 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (2382) & Level 4 Design and Verification (2396).
- Minimum HNC in Electrical Engineering (Ideally BEng).
- Working towards or achieved Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status.
- Experience with REVIT BIM, Hazardous Area Design (ATEX/IECEx), and DSEAR.
- National Grid Person - Substation and/or EUSR - SHEA Gas certifications.
