Job summary

A Mechanical Design Engineer is sought for a Colchester area role. The successful candidate will design and develop mechanical and electromechanical products using 3D CAD, produce drawings and specifications, and support development from concept to manufacture.

Requirements include experience with SolidWorks, understanding of manufacturing processes, and ability to work with cross functional teams. Desirable skills include SolidWorks PDM and sheet metal design.

Qualifications

• Experience as Mechanical Design Engineer or Designer in product-based manufacturing.
• Strong SolidWorks 3D modelling and design skills.
• Solid understanding of manufacturing processes and standards.
• Experience designing components and assemblies.
• Knowledge of tolerance, DFMs and cost-effective engineering.
• Good communication, problem solving and organisational abilities.
• Relevant engineering qualification or equivalent practical experience.

Responsibilities

Mechanical Design Engineer Colchester area £40,000

We are recruiting for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join an established and growing engineering and manufacturing business based in the Colchester area.

This is an excellent opportunity to work on a variety of exciting projects, developing innovative mechanical products from initial concept through to manufacture. The successful candidate will work closely with an experienced engineering team, with opportunities to develop into an independent designer.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and develop mechanical and electromechanical products using 3D CAD software
• Produce detailed engineering drawings, technical documentation and specifications
• Support product development from concept through to prototyping, testing and manufacture
• Apply Design for Manufacture (DFM) principles, tolerance analysis and cost optimisation
• Work closely with engineering, manufacturing and project teams to deliver projects on time
• Identify design improvements and troubleshoot technical issues
• Support and mentor junior engineers where required

Skills & Experience Required

• Previous experience as a Mechanical Design Engineer or Mechanical Designer, ideally within a product-based manufacturing environment
• Strong experience using SolidWorks for 3D modelling and design
• Good understanding of manufacturing processes, materials and engineering standards
• Experience designing mechanical components and assemblies
• Knowledge of design for manufacture, tolerances and cost-effective engineering solutions
• Strong communication, problem-solving and organisational skills
• Relevant engineering qualification or equivalent practical experience

Desirable Experience

• SolidWorks PDM, CircuitWorks or SolidWorks Routing
• Sheet metal design and fabrication
• CNC machining and 3D printing
• Mechanical design for electronic systems
