SP Energy Networks in Glasgow/Cambuslang invites a Design Engineer (OHL) to develop and deliver engineering solutions for 33kV to 400kV transmission projects. The role supports high-value initiatives enabling Scotland's Net Zero goals, covering feasibility through to detailed design with a focus on safety, quality, and environmental compliance.

Design Engineer (OHL) SP Energy Networks, Fullarton Drive, Glasgow East Investment Park, Cambuslang. G32 8FA Salary from £45,400 per annum Permanent/Hybrid (3 days office/2 days remote) Closing Date: 9th October 2026

Reporting to the Overhead Line Engineering Section Head, you will develop and deliver Engineering solutions for Transmission network projects ranging from 33kV up to 400kV.

This role offers the opportunity to work on high-value, complex projects that directly enable Scotland's Net Zero goals.

You will provide technical expertise throughout the project lifecycle, from feasibility studies through to detailed Design, ensuring our Overhead Line systems meet the highest standards of safety, quality and environmental compliance.

What you'll be doing

Taking ownership of developing pre-contract Design information and providing technical guidance for project delivery teams, you will focus on Overhead Line systems and associated equipment. Your accountabilities include preparing detailed Engineering specifications and designs for high-value Transmission projects, ensuring all work aligns with current legislation, policies and operational requirements. Conducting technical assessments of submissions, providing clear recommendations to project teams, you will define equipment requirements for System Construction Authorisation and Project Technical Specifications, as well as prepare and review Overhead Line drawings and technical specifications for construction, procurement, and stakeholders. Assisting with the resolution of site and construction issues forms a key part of this position. Providing technical expertise to Pre-Contract and Project Delivery teams on matters concerning Design, Construction, Operation and Maintenance of Overhead Line systems, you will also prepare project quality documentation, ensuring all deliverables meet SP Energy Networks quality processes and standards. Driving innovation and industry best practice is essential. You will evaluate new technologies, equipment, materials and alternative working methods to deliver cost savings, improve efficiencies and enhance safety outcomes. Working across global multidisciplinary Engineering teams, you will contribute to integrated, end-to-end solutions that keep our Transmission network operating reliably and efficiently.

What you'll bring

You will ideally hold a degree in Electrical/Mechanical/Civil Engineering or HND with equivalent practical experience and be working towards membership of a professional institution. Significant experience in an Engineering position focused on Transmission network Overhead Lines and associated equipment is essential. You must demonstrate proven capability in delivering Engineering solutions and Designs for high-value, complex Transmission Overhead Line projects. Effective communication skills are required, along with the ability to build productive working relationships across departments and businesses. You will need the capability to implement and promote CDM and Health & Safety best practice within a Design environment, representing departments or project teams on Overhead Line Engineering issues, evaluations, standards and industry best practice. The ability to write clear, concise reports and technical documents is essential, as is the capability to communicate with and influence Senior Management. Experience using Overhead Line system Design software is preferable. You must be flexible with working hours to meet project needs and willing to undertake short trips away from home as required.
