Olympus Health needs a consultant dermatologist to lead its community dermatology service and run consultant clinics within it on a one-year fixed-term basis. The post covers new and follow-up adult clinics, triage of referrals, and minor skin surgery, alongside setting clinical standards and pathways for the service. It is distinct for combining clinical lead responsibilities with clinic and procedure work, plus audit, education and mentoring of GPwERs, nurses and local GPs. Applicants must be on the GMC Specialist Register for dermatology and hold a current GMC licence to practise.
What the job involves
- Act as clinical lead and write and maintain the clinical model: referral, acceptance and exclusion criteria, triage rules, pathways and discharge criteria
- Run consultant clinics for routine adult referrals aged 18 and over, new and follow-up
- Diagnose and manage general dermatology conditions, including long-term follow-up of complex skin conditions and patients on specialist therapies
- Review complex, uncertain or escalated cases from GPwERs and other clinicians
- Triage referrals via NHS e-RS, a local referral support service or teledermatology, and return those outside acceptance criteria
- Perform minor skin surgery, including diagnostic biopsies, excision of benign and low-risk lesions, curettage, cautery and cryotherapy
- Ensure documented informed consent, a pre-procedure safety check and infection prevention and control for every procedure
- Send excised tissue for histology and track every sample and result, with a failsafe, communicating outcomes to patients and GPs
- Refer confirmed cancers straight away to the appropriate consultant or skin cancer MDT
- Lead clinical audit, including diagnostic accuracy, skin cancer detection, histology outcomes, complication and infection rates, and patient outcomes
- Work with the Head of Operations so clinic capacity, booking rules and the Referral Hub reflect the clinical pathways
- Train, mentor and educate GPwERs, nurses and local GPs, including support for GPwER accreditation
