Job summary

Priory Hospital Cheadle Royal is seeking a Deputy Ward Manager to lead shifts on a mixed acute ward, supervise nursing staff and deputise for the Ward Manager as required. The post focuses on therapeutic interventions, risk management and safe staffing for young people and adults with mental health and learning disability needs.

The role requires active NMC registration and post-registration experience, with a full-time commitment of 37.5 hours weekly. DBS checks are supported by Priory.

Job description

This Deputy Ward Manager post sits on the mixed acute ward at Priory Hospital Cheadle Royal, a mental health inpatient service for young people and adults. The post-holder works as a senior nurse, leading shifts, supervising and developing nursing staff, and deputising for the Ward Manager when required. The work centres on therapeutic interventions for people with mental health and learning disability needs, alongside risk management and safe staffing. It is a full-time role of 37.5 hours a week and requires active NMC registration.

What the job involves

• Ensure a safe, therapeutic and inclusive environment for patients, families and visitors, within policy, statutory and governance standards
• Provide and evaluate therapeutic interventions for people with mental health and/or learning disability needs
• Assess and manage risk, promoting collaborative problem-solving
• Maintain safe staffing levels and skill mix
• Supervise and develop nursing staff through CPD, mandatory training, appraisal and clinical supervision
• Address staff performance concerns and support junior staff and student nurses
• Lead shifts and undertake agreed ward lead roles
• Act as Named Nurse and Associate Nurse
• Deputise for the Ward Manager when required
• Contribute to multidisciplinary working
• Support recruitment and retention
• Promote diversity, inclusion and a culture of learning and continuous improvement

What’s required

Registration & licences

• Active NMC registration

Experience

• At least 18 months or 2 years post-registration experience (the advert states both)

Skills & knowledge

• Demonstrable expertise within a clinical speciality

Checks & eligibility

• Successful DBS disclosure at an appropriate level, or Access NI or Disclosure Scotland equivalent

Nice to have

• Experience in an acute setting
