Deputy Headteacher

Curriculum and Assessment

Starting from September 2025

Contract: Full-Time (Permanent)

Salary: £76,707 - Leadership 13

Phoenix Arch School is an oversubscribed community SEN school with a strong and supportive staff team. All 55 pupils attending the school have a diagnosis of ASD. The school equips pupils with knowledge, skills, and creativity, preparing them for the next phase of their education and lifelong learning.

Additionally, our school aims to provide comprehensive speech and language assessment, diagnosis (where appropriate), and intervention strategies for children with communication difficulties as an integral part of their educational experience.

We offer tailored learning pathways to ensure pupils access a curriculum and approach to learning suitable for their needs.

We are excited to advertise for a Deputy Head Teacher at Phoenix Arch School; this role offers an excellent opportunity to build and lead an innovative learning provision.

The Post:

The Deputy Head Teacher will support the Head Teacher with daily management and take a lead role in the school's strategic direction. The Deputy will deputise and assume full responsibility for the school in the Head's absence. As part of the leadership team, the Deputy Head will help shape the school's culture, vision, aims, and objectives, establish policies, manage staff and resources, and monitor progress toward these goals.

The Person:

We seek someone who prioritizes children, holds high aspirations for all, and demonstrates outstanding leadership and practice. The candidate should have:

  • Commitment to high standards in teaching and learning
  • Good understanding of autism and neurodivergence, including strengths and challenges
  • Excellent knowledge of the National Curriculum (KS1 and KS2) and how to adapt it for SEN
  • Proven leadership in curriculum and assessment
  • Knowledge of statutory assessment arrangements at KS1 and KS2
  • Understanding of different learning pathways and styles
  • Leadership experience in mainstream or special primary schools, with the ability to inspire
  • Evidence of professional development, e.g., NPQSL, and leadership skills
  • Commitment to high aspirations for staff and students
Roles and Responsibilities:

In addition to duties outlined in the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions document, the Deputy Head will:

  • Teach some classes to provide non-contact time for class teachers
  • Lead on curriculum, teaching, and learning across the school
  • Promote continual improvement and high standards through team-teaching and staff development
  • Lead statutory assessment and testing processes
  • Manage internal assessment and tracking systems
  • Monitor and evaluate school provision to improve progress and standards
  • Oversee pastoral care, behaviour management, and safeguarding
  • Assist in recruiting and inducting staff
  • Lead assemblies, staff briefings, and meetings
  • Enhance personal development opportunities for pupils and CPD for staff
  • Collaborate with SENCO, Speech and Language, and Occupational Therapists
  • Attend pupil reviews with parents
  • Support the Headteacher with daily staff absence management and cover, including PPA time
