Salary: £76,707 - Leadership 13

Phoenix Arch School is an over-subscribed community SEN school with a strong and supportive staff team. All 55 pupils attending the school have a diagnosis of ASD. Phoenix Arch School equips pupils with knowledge, skills, and creativity by preparing them for the next phase of their education and for lifelong learning.

In addition, our school aims to provide full speech and language assessment, diagnosis (where appropriate), and intervention strategies for children with communication difficulties as an integral part of their educational experience.

We offer learning pathways to ensure pupils can access a curriculum and approach to learning that remains appropriate for their needs.

We are delighted to advertise for a Deputy Head Teacher at Phoenix Arch School; this role presents an exciting opportunity to build and lead an innovative learning provision.

The Post:

The Deputy Head Teacher plays a major role in supporting the Head Teacher with the day-to-day management of the school, as well as taking a lead role in the strategic direction of the school. The Deputy Head Teacher will be required to deputise and assume full responsibility for the school in the absence of the Headteacher. As a member of the leadership team, the Deputy Head Teacher will play a major role in formulating the culture, vision, aims, and objectives of the school, establishing policies to achieve them, managing staff and resources, and monitoring progress.

We are looking for someone who puts children first, always, and holds high aspirations for all.

We seek an outstanding practitioner and leader who has:

  • Commitment to promoting high standards in teaching and learning
  • Good understanding of autism and neurodivergence, including strengths and challenges
  • Excellent understanding of National Curriculum subject knowledge (KS1 and KS2) and how to adapt it for SEN
  • Proven track record of leading curriculum and assessment
  • Knowledge of statutory assessment arrangements at KS1 and KS2
  • Understanding of different learning pathways and styles
  • Senior leadership experience at a mainstream or special primary school, with proven ability to lead and inspire
  • Evidence of further professional study, e.g., NPQSL, and strong leadership skills
  • Commitment to high aspirations for staff and students

Roles and Responsibilities:

In addition to duties outlined in the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions document, the Deputy Headteacher will have specific roles including:

  • Teaching some classes to provide non-contact time for class teachers
  • Leading curriculum, teaching, and learning across the school
  • Driving continual improvement and high standards through team teaching, leading insets, and demonstrating excellence
  • Leading statutory assessment and testing alongside the headteacher
  • Managing internal assessment and tracking systems
  • Monitoring and evaluating school provision to raise progress, standards, and achievement
  • Supporting pastoral care, behaviour management, and safeguarding
  • Recruiting and inducting staff alongside the headteacher
  • Leading assemblies, staff briefings, and meetings
  • Enhancing personal development opportunities for pupils and CPD for staff
  • Collaborating with SENCO, Speech and Language, and Occupational Therapists
  • Attending pupil annual review meetings with parents
  • Supporting the day-to-day management of the school, including staff absence and cover, including PPA time
