Job summary

The Environment Agency is seeking an inspiring Deputy Director, Navigation Operations to lead our place-based navigation services and dedicated teams delivering safe, reliable waterways.

You will shape and deliver our five-year strategy, oversee locks, weirs, harbours and rivers, and ensure our statutory duties and performance targets are met. The role covers 150+ staff across dispersed locations with travel to Thames, Medway, Anglian Waterways and Rye/Lydney harbours.

Qualifications

• Extensive leadership experience in complex operational environments.
• Ability to interpret operational, asset, performance and financial information.
• Experience leading teams through transformation and managing risks.
• Excellent political judgement and stakeholder engagement skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead operational delivery for navigation across locks, harbours and waterways.
• Embed health, safety and wellbeing standards across dispersed teams.
• Identify and deliver continuous improvements and innovations in operations.
• Engage with local stakeholders, build partnerships with leaders, MPs and authorities.
• Foster an inclusive culture and consistent standards across the workforce.
