Job Description:

Summary

The Chief of Staff for Technology runs the “Office of the CTO” and supports the CTO in delivering the strategic goals of the firm, and in the day-to-day management and operation of a 500-person technology department. This position will report to and deputise for the Technology Chief of Staff

Office of the CTO functions Covered

The role has direct responsibility for the team of Product Leads, currently a team of seven domain experts, some operating as senior level individual contributors

Product Leads: Subject matter experts who direct the resources of the department in a way that produces optimum stakeholder outcomes. Covers project and program management, communication, and reporting.

The office of the CTO is also responsible for the following functions, which the deputy CoS will be engaged with

Business Management : the day-to-day business management of a large department, with an annual budget of over $100m. Other responsibilities in this area include event planning, communications and reporting, overseas office buildout, general team, and talent management.

ITO Operations and Risk: responsible for central support and incident management, managing operational risk, business continuity and working with our internal information security team to understand and manage cyber security concerns.

Engineering Enablement: responsible for helping the engineering teams measure and improve delivery processes and productivity, and adoption of uniform standards.

Additionally, the Office of the CTO collaborates closely with the Head of Strategy for Technology and this role will be expected to share responsibility for the implementation of some strategic priorities

Strategy: responsibility for devising and driving technology strategy and transformation to maximise the impact of the technology function at Man. This includes our drive towards a single cohesive investment platform, achieving excellence in talent, culture, and DEI, building out a global team, and buy vs build decision making.

The Individual

The hiring ethos of the department is “Bright People Who Get Things Done.” So, whilst it is likely that the successful candidate does have experience in several of the above areas, resourcefulness, aptitude, hunger to drive change and delivery focus are more important than a specific current skillset. Experience in financial markets is necessary, as is an eagerness to close any knowledge gaps in this area.

Man is a diverse and complex organisation, and technology powers every part of it, so the ability to connect and communicate with professionals in every discipline and at every level of seniority is important. The successful candidate will prioritise the team and the firm’s best interests and be prepared to turn their hand to whatever is needed to ensure the smooth running of the department. They will focus on the growth and career development of their team and have a demonstratable track record of positive DE&I impact.

The successful candidate will have lived experience of the challenges of building and delivering technology, perhaps gained through coding, or managing engineering teams in early career. Comfort with data driven analysis and decision making, confidence in excel and power point are essential.

Location

London based, with an expectation of 3 days per week in the office. Ability for occasional travel to other office locations in the UK, US, Europe, and Asia.
