Job summary

Herefordshire Council is seeking a reliable Delivered Services Driver/Assistant to support library deliveries across Herefordshire. The role is 12-month fixed term with Wednesday & Thursday shifts, 8.30am–3.30pm or 9am–4pm, and a pro-rata salary in the £9k range for part-time work.

Initial duties include loading, driving and delivering to libraries, with occasional relief cover. You will need a full clean licence, fysieke fitness for heavy crates and a DBS check.

Qualifications

• Full clean driving licence (UK standard B category or above).
• Physically fit and capable of packing, sorting, lifting and moving crates and boxes.
• Enhanced DBS check required.
• Good communication skills and familiarity with standard IT systems; accurate data input.

Responsibilities

• Drive Extended Long Wheelbase Transit to deliver and collect crates and bags of books to libraries and sites.
• Unload/load the van and prepare deliveries; check vehicle before/after shifts.
• Work safely and considerately, sometimes entering closed buildings or working in tight spaces.
• Deliver to Home Delivery customers and schools when required; adapt to rural routes.

Grade: 04HC
Salary: £26,016 - £26,847 (pro-rata £9,141 - £9,433)
Contract: 12 months Fixed Term

The Role

We have a vacancy for a reliable delivery driver in our Herefordshire Libraries team to deliver books and other materials to libraries and other sites. This will initially be on a contract basis for 12 months.

Wednesday and Thursday 8.30am – 3.30pm or 9am – 4pm (half hour lunch-break). Plus occasional additional relief cover.

What will you be doing?

On a typical day you will drive our Extended Long Wheelbase Transit around the county delivering and collecting crates and bags of books to/from libraries and other sites. You may have to let yourself into buildings if the library is closed; or deliver crates when the library is open to the public and be mindful of doing this safely and considerately.

Your day will start and end at our County Libraries Unit in Hereford, where you will do vehicle checks, load/unload the van, and prepare the delivery for the next day.

Some of our sites have restricted access or small carparks, and you may need to reverse or manoeuvre in tight spaces. At others you may need to park on the road or away from the site and trolley crates safely across. Sometimes you may encounter road closures or even flocks of sheep! So, the successful candidate will need to be adaptable, with a positive attitude, and be comfortable working on their own as well as part of a team.

The main focus of this post will be the daily library deliveries, but sometimes you will deliver books to Home Delivery customers in rural areas, or resources to schools and children’s centres. This post therefore requires an Enhanced DBS check.

About You

Applicants must hold a Full clean driving licence (UK standard B category or above) and be confident in driving larger vehicles.

Books are heavy, so you will need to be physically fit and capable of packing, sorting, lifting and moving multiple crates and boxes. A good understanding of health and safety and manual handling techniques is required.

You will also need good communication skills, be familiar with using standard IT systems, and be able to shelve books in order and input customer data accurately.

Enhanced DBS required.
