Lloyd’s Register

Are you a risk management professional ready to lead the charge in maritime safety? Join Lloyd’s Register’s Maritime Decarbonisation Hub (MDH) as a Senior Technical Lead, where you’ll advance cutting-edge safety strategies for integrating alternative fuels and new technologies in the maritime sector. Lead risk assessments, support high-stakes projects, mentor a Risk Engineer, and foster a safety-first culture across global operations. With approx. 7-12 years’ experience and expertise as a risk engineer with knowledge of human factors, you’ll drive innovation in a team that’s committed to safety, integrity, and sustainable change.

What we’re looking for

As a Senior Technical Lead in the Human Safety and Risk team, you will be responsible for supporting the Lloyd’s Register Maritime Decarbonisation Hub’s (MDH) Human Safety and Risk program. Working closely with colleagues with human factors expertise, you will apply your expertise in risk assessment to ensure the safe integration of alternative fuels (e.g., ammonia, methanol, hydrogen) and new technologies in the maritime sector. Some knowledge and familiarity with human factors principles and their application within high-hazard industries is required. This role involves contributing to complex projects while overseeing the professional development and work of a Risk Engineer, ensuring both line management and technical mentorship.

This is a key role for a professional with approx. 7 - 12 years of experience, who is eager to grow their leadership and technical capabilities in the field of risk management.

What we offer you

  • A regular full-time position.
  • Flexible work schedules with an appreciation for work-life balance.
  • Working in a global company with the ability to work with different cultures and diverse people.
  • The opportunity to work for an organization that has a strong sense of purpose, is values-driven, and helps colleagues to develop professionally and personally through our range of people development programs.
  • This is a full-time permanent opportunity
  • Start: as soon as possible, but other arrangements can be discussed
  • UK-based individual
  • Hybrid with a mix of remote and indicatively 2 days per week at 71 Fenchurch Street, London

The role

  • Risk Assessment for Alternative Fuels and Technologies:
Conduct and lead qualitative and quantitative risk assessments for alternative fuels and emerging maritime technologies. Work closely with human factors colleagues to ensure human factors and technical safety are integrated throughout risk management processes, particularly in operational contexts involving high-risk environments such as ammonia bunkering or hydrogen fuel handling.
  • Project Leadership:
Lead and contribute to multi-disciplinary projects focused on risk and human safety in the energy transition. Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to address emerging risks in alternative fuel adoption.
  • Line Management and Mentorship:
Provide direct line management to a Risk Engineer, including technical oversight, workload management, and career development support. Mentor and coach the Risk Engineer, facilitating knowledge transfer, skill development, and professional growth.
  • Support Development of Safety Culture, Competency and future strategies:
Support colleagues in building and sustaining a culture of safety across the industry, focusing on process safety approaches and competency development for both shore-side and vessel-based personnel. This includes developing training programs and competency frameworks to support the safe handling of alternative fuels.
  • Stakeholder Engagement and Advisory:
Work with internal teams, regulators, and industry partners to advocate for best practices in safety, risk management, and human factors integration across the maritime decarbonisation landscape.
  • Continuous Professional Development:
Stay current with the latest industry standards, research, and best practices in the properties of alternative, risk management, and safety. Ensure you and your team maintain a high level of technical expertise and professional development.

Role Dimensions:

  • Geographic Scope: Global, with focus on projects related to maritime decarbonisation and human safety.
  • Key Stakeholders: Internal (MDH Human Factors experts, Other MDH colleagues, LR teams), external (clients, regulatory bodies, industry partners).

    • Experience in managing or mentoring junior team members is essential.
    • Strong knowledge of safety-critical systems and hazard assessment techniques (HAZID, HAZOP, Bowtie, LOPA, FTA, ETA, consequence analysis tools and QRA).
  • Certifications:
Chartered Engineer status or working towards membership in a relevant professional body is preferred.

Core Competencies:

  • Customer Focus:
Engage with stakeholders to understand needs and provide high-quality, safety-focused solutions. Proactively identify and resolve challenges impacting the customer experience.
