About the role

National Energy System Operator (NESO) recognises the potential of bright and talented individuals, and we encourage you to join us as Great Britain’s energy system undergoes an ambitious, exciting, and vital transformation. Together with industry, we are creating a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.

We are looking for people with regulation, policy, and technical code change experience to be part of a team that will deliver an exciting new perspective on industry codes in GB, enabling the transition to net zero. Industry codes are the contracts that underpin the operational, technical and commercial relationships in the energy industry. The team you will work in supports and enables the business to operate within our regulatory licensed activities, providing expert regulatory support to the business in order to maximise benefits for end consumers and Great Britain.

Senior Change Leads facilitate and drive the change process within our legal and regulatory frameworks that underpin the operational, technical and commercial relationships in GB to ensure that the Codes and Frameworks in place are easy for all to understand, deliver positive change for end consumers and meet our ambitious net zero targets. The Codes in the remit of the Technical Codes team includes the Grid Code, System Operator Transmission Owner Code (STC) and Security and Quality of Supply Standards (SQSS).

This role can be based from Wokingham, Warwick, Glasgow (we are also offering an office space in London), and we continue to offer hybrid working from office and home. We are open to full time and part time applicants, as well as flexible working arrangements.

About You

We’re forging the path, and we know we can’t do it alone. That’s why we need visionary minds like yours to join us on this transformative journey. In this case, we’re looking for someone who:

  • Is passionate about communicating complex ideas and interested in developing technical experience to allow understanding of complex technical issues affecting the electricity system and their solutions.
  • Has experience of building long term effective internal and external relationships combined with the potential to develop strong negotiating and influencing skills.
  • Has good understanding of the purpose of GB technical frameworks, potentially with knowledge of at least one of the Technical Codes (ie Grid Code, SO/TO Code (STC) and SQSS).
  • Has previous technical experience allowing understanding of complex technical issues affecting the electricity system and their solutions.
  • Has the ability to collate and organise data, grasp and analyse complex issues and their interactions within NESO and more widely with our customers, through a robust understanding of the GB electricity market and NESO’s customers, stakeholders and insight into their technical and commercial drivers.
  • Is experienced in communicating complex ideas, internally and externally, at a senior level.
  • Is a strong communicator with excellent writing skills.

About Us

National Energy System Operator’s (NESO) mission is to facilitate the decarbonisation of Great Britain’s energy network and ensure the delivery of reliable, affordable, and clean electricity for consumers. We work with stakeholders across the whole energy industry to plan for future network needs, using a wider adoption of technology and changes in consumer behaviour, as well as ensuring we have the right markets, networks, and frameworks in place, to transform the way we operate tomorrow.

Join us, and let’s energise progress.

Your energy, our future, together.

About The National Energy System Operator (NESO)

In Autumn of 2024, the ESO transitioned to National Energy System Operator, or NESO for short. Previously denoted as the Future System Operator (or FSO), the new National Energy System Operator is the independent body responsible for planning Great Britain’s electricity and gas networks and operating the electricity system.

The ESO, including all of its existing roles, are now at the heart of the new National Energy System Operator. As NESO, we will build on our existing roles, capabilities, and ways of working significantly to create an organisation the energy system and its users’ need. Our new capabilities will enable us to look across vectors, including electricity, natural gas and hydrogen, and crucially consider the trade-offs between them.

The organisation is set up as a public corporation with its own Board of independent directors, with complete operational independence from government, the regulator and any and all commercial interest. As was the ESO, NESO will be licenced and regulated by Ofgem through price control agreements and obligated to identify optimal solutions to system operations and planning in the most sustainable, affordable and secure way for all.

The time to deliver is now. As part of our team, you won’t just be touching the lives of almost everyone in Great Britain – you’ll be shaping the way we use and consume energy for generations to come.

What You'll Get

A competitive salary between £52000 – £65000 p.a. – dependent on experience and capability.

As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus based on company performance, 26 days annual leave as standard and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.

You will also have access to a comprehensive benefits package tailored to support your well-being and professional success. From a competitive salary to flexible work arrangements, we promote your work-life balance. Enjoy fit for purpose wellbeing and lifestyle offerings, ongoing skill development aligned to our Purpose and Values, and be part of a supportive community that values your individuality and where you can belong.

Key Accountabilities

  • Work across the energy industry to identify and analyse issues within the current industry technical codes and wider market frameworks, with the ability to present key findings and recommendations, including at internal governance forums.
  • Develop and implement industry technical code changes.
  • Manage NESO input and engagement (both internally and externally) into complex technical code modifications and develop technical solutions to meet NESO’s needs, chairing technical meetings where required.
  • Ensure that, during technical code development, due account is taken of implementation issues such that changes can be fully delivered by the business.
  • Develop legal text, where required, which fully enables those implementation needs and is practically achievable for all impacted parties.
  • Negotiate with, manage, and influence key stakeholders who all have competing priorities or end goals. Engage with Ofgem, in particular the Chief Engineer’s team, to ensure that NESO’s technical and commercial position is understood and to help develop its appreciation of the impact of potential changes.
  • Provide necessary technical, regulatory and commercial input to external committees and working groups, ensuring that sufficient influence is used in discussions with customers, stakeholders, DESNZ and Ofgem to deliver results that align with NESO’s commercial, technical, regulatory and European strategy and manage those issues and changes ensuring all internal and external customer and stakeholder expectations are managed effectively.
  • Continuously develop leadership skills to increase ability to work independently on more complex changes. Coach and mentor other team members.

More Information

This role closes on 20th May 2025 at 23:59, however we encourage candidates to submit their application as early as possible and not wait until the published closing date as this can vary. Interviews will be held in the w.c. 2nd June 2025.

We work towards the highest standards in everything we do, including how we support, value and develop our people. Our aim is to encourage and support employees to thrive and be the best they can be. We celebrate the difference people can bring into our organisation, and welcome and encourage applicants with diverse experiences and backgrounds, and offer flexible and tailored support, at home and in the office.
