Job summary

PX Group in Middlesbrough is seeking a Days Instrument Technician on a 12-month fixed-term contract to maintain control and instrumentation systems at TeesREP power plant. The role covers installation, calibration, testing and fault diagnosis of C&I equipment, with oversight of contractor activities and strict adherence to health, safety and environmental procedures.

You will be required to read P&IDs, manage calibrations with field instruments and operate CMMS for maintenance records.

Qualifications

  • Experience with DCS/PLC/SCADA systems and version control.
  • Ability to read P&IDs and loop diagrams.
  • Knowledge of Safe System of Work and permit to work.
  • Experience in maintenance and testing of C&I equipment.
  • Familiarity with repair, calibration and testing procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Install, calibrate, adjust, troubleshoot and repair C&I equipment and DCS/PLC control systems.
  • Supervise contractors on site.
  • Use test equipment to calibrate Controllers.
  • Ensure controls are calibrated per specs and documented.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and record in CMMS.
  • Maintain reliability/availability of C&I equipment per P&ID and specs.
  • Respond to emergency fault conditions.
  • Diagnose complex faults and locate causes.
  • Test circuits for safety and compatibility.

The Opportunity

We are now recruiting for an Instrument Technician to join the day team on a 12 month fixed term basis.

The Instrument Technician is responsible for the repair and maintenance of all C&I assets. You will be responsible for the Inspection, Maintenance and testing of all Control and Instrumentation systems within the TeesREP power plant. You will carry out calibrations on C&I equipment and components which will include repairing, tuning, and replacement of C&I Components.

Key Responsibilities
  • Complete installation, calibrations, adjustments, troubleshooting and repairs on various types of power plant C&I Equipment and DCS, PLC control systems.
  • Provide consistently high levels of supervision of contractors at the site.
  • Uses test equipment including, but not limited to: field communicators, calibrators, voltmeters, ammeters, phase indicators, multi-function testers, and oscilloscopes, and able to calibrate Controllers.
  • Ensure that all controls are operating and calibrated according to the manufacturer specifications and ensure they have been documented.
  • Through research, prescribe preventative maintenance requirements for all C&I equipment for validation by engineering.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance of C&I Assets and assure the quality of executing all PM tasks including recording detailed information in the CMMS.
  • Ensure reliability/availability of all C&I equipment by monitoring preventive maintenance requirements on plant items. Following P&ID’s, sketches, operations manuals, manufacturer's instructions, and engineering specifications.
  • Respond effectively to emergency fault conditions, when required.
  • Perform and direct complex fault diagnosis on all plant equipment and control systems. Diagnose malfunctioning systems, apparatus, and components, using test equipment and hand tools, to locate the cause of a breakdown and correct the problem.
  • Test control systems and continuity of circuits in hardware wiring, equipment, and fixtures, using testing devices such as ohmmeters, voltmeters, and oscilloscopes, to ensure compatibility and safety of system.
  • Ensure that all reporting within the Computerised Maintenance Management System is effective and followed through to completion promptly.
  • Ensure all activities within the plant are carried out in a safe manner to prevent environmental impact ensuring this is in line with site Health, Safety and Environmental procedures and all legislative obligations.
Minimum Requirements
  • Strong background of working hands-on with DCS, PLC and SCADA systems including version control management, access restrictions and testing. Preferably experience with Siemens, Schneider and ABB platforms.
  • Foundational understanding of Alarm Management practices.
  • Foundational understanding of the use of radioactive isotopes.
  • Good understanding of plant processes and how electrical supports generation availability; preferably in a thermal power plant.
  • Good knowledge and be able to demonstrate proficiency in process control, maintenance and troubleshooting of Plant DCS/PLC equipment.
  • Good understanding of associated limits and alarms and ability to troubleshoot and correct faults within hardware or software related systems.
  • Knowledge of working with a Safe System of Work and permit to work system.
  • Knowledge of reading P&IDs, process and loop diagrams.
