Data Specialist (Geospatial & Drone Survey Data)

Location: York (Hybrid Working)

Contract Type: Fixed-Term Contract (6 Months)

Overview

Our client is seeking a Data Specialist to support an innovative research and data preservation programme focused on the long-term management, accessibility, and reuse of geospatial and heritage-related datasets.

This role offers an exciting opportunity to work with drone-derived survey data, photogrammetry, lidar, and other remote sensing datasets, ensuring they are prepared, standardised, archived, and made accessible for future research, conservation, and public engagement purposes.

The successful candidate will combine technical expertise in geospatial data management with strong organisational skills and an interest in digital preservation, archives, heritage science, or research data management.

Responsibilities

Data Management & Preparation

• Collate, clean, standardise, and prepare geospatial datasets for long-term preservation.
• Process and organise drone-derived survey data, photogrammetry outputs, lidar datasets, and related geospatial information.
• Ensure data quality, consistency, and compliance with archival standards.
• Prepare datasets for public access, research use, and long-term storage.

Digital Archiving & Preservation

• Support the archiving and preservation of digital research datasets.
• Review and manage metadata to ensure discoverability and usability.
• Assess data sensitivity, licensing requirements, and access restrictions.
• Apply data management best practices and archival standards.

Research & Heritage Data Support

• Contribute to projects involving heritage, environmental, archaeological, or geospatial datasets.
• Support the preservation and accessibility of research outputs.
• Assist in maintaining high standards of data governance and stewardship.
• Collaborate with project partners and stakeholders to ensure successful delivery of project objectives.

Project Delivery

• Manage and prioritise workload effectively within a fixed-term project environment.
• Maintain accurate documentation and records relating to datasets and archiving activities.
• Support continuous improvement of data management and preservation processes.

Requirements

Essential Qualifications & Experience

• Degree-level qualification or equivalent professional experience in one of the following areas:
• Geospatial Science
• Archaeology
• GIS
• Data Management
• Information Management
• Related discipline
• Experience working with geospatial datasets.
• Experience handling photogrammetry, lidar, remote sensing, or similar spatial data.
• Experience in data preparation, data management, or digital archiving.
• Strong organisational and workload management skills.
• Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to project teams.
• Understanding of geospatial data standards and formats.
• Strong attention to detail and data quality management.
• Analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
• Effective communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
• Experience working within heritage, archaeology, conservation, archives, research infrastructure, or academic environments.
• Knowledge of metadata standards and digital preservation frameworks.
• Familiarity with GIS platforms, spatial data tools, and archive management systems.
