Job summary

Hitachi Rail UK Limited is seeking a Data Science Engineer to join our Analytics team in Eastleigh, Southampton, on-site. The role focuses on large-scale sensor data, developing machine learning and condition monitoring solutions to deliver analytics capabilities globally.

A Master’s or PhD in a STEM field and commercial data science experience are preferred. Candidates should be proficient in Python, R or MATLAB, with strong data analysis skills and excellent communication.

Qualifications

• Strong programming skills in Python, R, MATLAB.
• Experience analysing and interpreting complex datasets.
• Understanding of Data Science and Machine Learning principles.
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present technical information clearly.
• Demonstrated experience delivering technical or research-based projects.
• A proactive mindset with strong problem-solving abilities.

Responsibilities

• Analyse complex sensor and operational datasets to identify trends, patterns and valuable customer insights.
• Design, develop and refine condition monitoring and machine learning algorithms.
• Develop software and analytical tools to support business and customer requirements.
• Work closely with cross-functional engineering and analytics teams on new capability development.
• Produce clear technical reports, presentations and visualisations for internal and external audiences.
• Contribute to continuous improvement of analytical approaches, tools and processes.
• Support production analytics systems and help investigate performance issues and technical challenges.
