Job summary

Basildon Borough Council is seeking a Legal Officer specializing in Information Governance and Data Protection on an initial 2‑month temporary contract in Basildon, Essex. The role focuses on managing SAR/FOI/EIR requests, advising on exemptions, and supporting data protection compliance across the council.

You will work with the Legal Services team and the Data Protection Officer, reviewing redactions and maintaining policies, with a minimum three onsite days per week.

Qualifications

• Experience handling information rights requests (SARs/FOI).
• Knowledge of UK GDPR and DPA 2018.
• Strong written and verbal communication.
• Experience in public-sector environment preferred.

Responsibilities

• Manage SAR, FOI and EIR requests.
• Redact confidential information and ensure legal exemptions.
• Provide guidance on UK GDPR and DPA 2018.
• Maintain records of data protection incidents.
• Support data protection audits and DPIAs.
• Collaborate with Legal Services and DPO.
• Deliver staff training on data protection.
• Keep privacy notices and policies up to date.
• Ensure deadlines are met.
• Assist with information governance processes.
