Job summary

Derby City Council is seeking a Cycle Trainer to deliver high-quality cycling training to children and adults across Derby. You’ll run Bikeability and in-school sessions, support inclusive cycling, and help participants build skills, confidence and enjoyment.

The role is casual, with work offered according to programme needs and your availability. You’ll work with the Cycle Derby Lead Coaches, maintain safety and quality, and have opportunities to mentor volunteers and develop your coaching

Qualifications

• Experience delivering cycling activities or coaching to children and/or adults.
• Strong cycling skills and ability to demonstrate techniques.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships.

Responsibilities

• Deliver high-quality cycle training and coaching to children and adults, building skills and confidence.
• Deliver Bikeability and cycle training in schools and in parks and community settings.
• Support inclusive cycling, adult sessions, holiday and community activities and other cycling sessions.
• Plan and organise activities with Lead Coaches, adapting for different participants and settings.
• Keep accurate records and provide feedback to support programme development.
• Support and mentor new Cycle Trainers and volunteers.

The Opportunity

If you're passionate about cycling and will enjoy helping people develop their skills, confidence and enjoyment whilst riding, this could be a great opportunity to join the Cycle Derby team.

As a Cycle Trainer, you'll have the opportunity to deliver a wide range of cycling activities for children and adults across Derby. Bikeability and cycle training in schools are a core part of our programme, but you could also get involved in inclusive cycling, adult sessions, holiday and community activities, and cyclo-cross and grass track sessions in schools.

In this role you'll be responsible for the sessions you deliver, adapting your approach to the people and circumstances in front of you and using your professional judgement to make decisions during delivery. You'll be trusted to take responsibility for the safety, quality and effectiveness of your sessions, while working as part of the wider Cycle Derby team and with support from the Lead Coaches.

The Cycle Trainer role offers flexibility and variety, with opportunities to develop your experience across different types of cycling delivery and with different participants. We are open to conversations about the availability you can offer and the areas of Cycle Derby's work that interest you most.

What you'll be doing

• Deliver high-quality cycle training and coaching to children and adults, helping participants build their skills, confidence and enjoyment of cycling.
• Deliver Bikeability and other cycle training activities in schools, alongside a range of cycle activities in parks, community settings and other locations.
• Support the delivery of inclusive cycling, adult cycling, holiday and community activities, and other cycling activities such as cyclo-cross, grass track and track cycling, depending on your experience and interests.
• Work with the Cycle Derby Lead Coaches and wider team to plan and organise activities, adapting your approach to different participants, settings and delivery requirements.
• Keep accurate records and provide feedback following activities to support the safe, effective and continued development of Cycle Derby programmes.
• Support and encourage new Cycle Trainers and volunteers where required, sharing your knowledge and experience to help others develop.
• Help promote Cycle Derby activities and represent the programme positively when working with schools, participants, partners and the wider community.

Please note: The role involves regular outdoor and physical activity and may require the safe handling, loading, unloading and transportation of bicycles and other equipment.

About you

You'll have:

• Experience of delivering cycling activities or coaching to children and/or adults, with the ability to adapt your approach to different ages, abilities and levels of confidence.
• Strong cycling skills and the confidence to demonstrate and coach a range of cycling techniques.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with participants, colleagues and partner organisations.
• The ability to work independently while also contributing positively to a wider team.
• A flexible and reliable approach, with the ability to work across different locations and adapt to changing delivery requirements.
• A commitment to safe, inclusive and positive cycling experiences for all participants.
• A relevant cycling instructor or coaching qualification, such as a 1st4Sport Level 2 Award in Cycle Instructor Training or British Cycling Level 2 coaching qualification, or the ability and willingness to obtain an appropriate qualification.

It would be beneficial if you have:

• Experience of delivering Bikeability or other cycle training in schools.
• Experience of delivering inclusive cycling, adult cycling, holiday activities, community cycling or cycling sport activities.
• Experience of supporting or mentoring other instructors, coaches or volunteers.

Working arrangements

This role is offered primarily on a casual, as-required basis, with work offered according to programme requirements and your availability.

Working patterns can be varied, with delivery taking place during school hours, school holidays and, on occasion, evenings and weekends.
