Job description

Cyber Security Manufacturing Technology Engineer

Help protect the operational technology that keeps modern manufacturing safe, resilient and productive.

Laing O'Rourke's IT function has renewed its strategy to support the company's ambition to transform the construction industry, making it more sustainable, more productive, and fit for the future.

Technology has a critical role to play in achieving this ambition. Our focus is on applying digital capability in ways that genuinely matter, shaping how complex projects are delivered, how decisions are made, and how innovation improves outcomes for people, communities, and the environment.

Our mission is clear: to create a modern and resilient technology environment where trusted data informs every decision, AI enhances every process, and digital capability enables the organisation to operate with greater scale and productivity.

To deliver this, we are building a different kind of IT function, one that is trusted by the business, forward looking in its thinking, and deeply connected to operational outcomes. We are looking for individuals who are curious, thoughtful, and motivated by contributing to work that has real industry impact.

The Role

As our Cyber Security Manufacturing Technology Engineer, you will help protect the operational technology (OT) and industrial control systems (ICS) used across our manufacturing environments. You will shape and maintain practical cyber security controls that support production efficiency, safety and quality, while reducing risk and protecting operational continuity and intellectual property.

Working at the intersection of manufacturing operations, engineering and cyber security, you will embed security into technology and processes from design through to operation. Your judgement and technical expertise will help colleagues understand risk, implement proportionate controls and respond effectively when issues arise.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, implement and continually improve cyber security controls for operational technology and manufacturing environments.
  • Collaborate across IT, manufacturing and engineering teams to deliver reliable solutions aligned with architecture and cyber security standards.
  • Assess vulnerabilities in manufacturing systems and equipment, then guide practical remediation or compensating controls that minimise operational disruption.
  • Integrate cyber security requirements into new production lines, industrial equipment and manufacturing systems from the outset.
  • Investigate cyber incidents affecting manufacturing and develop recovery approaches that reduce production downtime and strengthen future resilience.
  • Work with Cyber Security Governance, Risk and Compliance colleagues to improve security across manufacturing suppliers and third-party vendors.
  • Support alignment with relevant frameworks and standards, including IEC 62443, ISO/IEC 27001 and the NIST Cybersecurity Framework.
Essential Requirements
  • Proven experience developing and implementing cyber security controls and governance in a manufacturing environment.
  • Deep understanding of industrial protocols, network segmentation and vulnerability management for manufacturing equipment.
  • Ability to translate technical and compliance topics into clear, business-relevant language for a range of stakeholders.
  • Sound analytical and problem-solving skills, with a practical and risk-based approach to decision-making.
  • Ability to work independently, remain accountable for outcomes and contribute effectively with multidisciplinary colleagues.
  • A clear commitment to quality and continuous improvement.
Desirable Requirements
  • A relevant professional certification, such as GICSP, CISSP or CISM.
  • Knowledge of operational technology cyber security standards, including IEC 62443 and NIST SP 800-82.
  • Experience working across multidisciplinary teams in a complex organisation.
What Makes This Role Compelling

This is an opportunity to influence cyber security in environments where digital resilience has a direct connection to safe, reliable manufacturing. You will work on meaningful technical challenges, build trusted relationships across operational and technology teams, and help shape security as an enabler of innovation and continuity.
