Job description

Manufacturing Engineer (Process, Equipment & Industrialisation)

Location: Sherwood, Nottingham

Construction has operated the same way for generations. We're changing that. Our vision is to transform construction through industrialised manufacturing—creating, proving and deploying technologies that make building safer, smarter, faster and more predictable.

At Laing O'Rourke, our R&D Manufacturing team is turning breakthrough ideas into real-world solutions that are redefining how construction is delivered. As part of the Technology & Innovation team, they sit at the forefront of the industry's evolution, accelerating the shift from traditional building methods to a smarter, more advanced future.

With the capability to create digital twins, develop bespoke production lines, trial emerging manufacturing technologies and test new products at scale, this is far more than modern methods of construction. It is the future of construction, being built today.

Behind every DfMA innovation lies a sophisticated programme of research, testing and validation. Working closely with our in-house design, digital engineering, manufacturing and delivery teams, the R&D Manufacturing team transforms ambitious concepts into scalable, industry-changing solutions that are shaping the next generation of construction.

Help define the manufacturing systems that will power the future of construction.

The opportunity

We are looking for a Manufacturing Engineer with a passion for industrialisation, production systems and advanced manufacturing. This is an opportunity to define how products move from design intent into scalable, repeatable production systems by balancing process, people, equipment, automation, logistics and digital technologies.

Working within our Advanced Manufacturing team, you'll help shape new manufacturing capabilities from early concept through to deployment, using engineering evidence, simulation and manufacturing first principles to influence how construction products are manufactured in the future.

Could this be you?

Do you enjoy solving manufacturing challenges by looking beyond individual processes and thinking about the whole production system?

Have you helped develop, industrialise or deploy manufacturing facilities, production lines or advanced production technologies?

Ready to apply your experience from advanced manufacturing, engineering or industrial sectors to help transform construction?

Key responsibilities
  • Define manufacturing process architectures, production strategies and capacity models for new manufacturing capabilities.
  • Develop facility layouts and production systems that integrate people, equipment, automation and material flow.
  • Use simulation and digital manufacturing tools to evaluate and optimise production performance before implementation.
  • Work with suppliers, integrators and internal stakeholders to develop and deploy manufacturing solutions.
  • Support trials, commissioning and operational readiness activities.
  • Validate manufacturing performance using data, testing and engineering evidence.
Essential skills and experience
  • Experience developing or influencing manufacturing processes, production lines, cells or facilities.
  • Ability to translate product and demand requirements into practical production systems.
  • Experience of production system design, facility planning or industrialisation activities.
  • Strong understanding of capacity, throughput, flow and manufacturing performance.
  • Experience using digital manufacturing, simulation or virtual factory tools to support engineering decisions.
  • Ability to work across disciplines and challenge assumptions using evidence-based engineering approaches.
Desirable skills and experience (Trainable or Transferable)
  • Hands-on experience or a degree qualification in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience with Dassault Systèmes 3DEXPERIENCE (3DX), particularly DELMIA for process planning, factory layout, simulation or resource modelling.
  • Experience of discrete-event simulation, robotic simulation, virtual commissioning or digital factory technologies.
  • Knowledge of automation, robotics, tooling, fixturing, metrology or advanced production equipment.
  • Experience of commissioning, ramp-up and deployment of manufacturing systems.
  • Exposure to high-volume, high-mix, configurable or first-of-a-kind (FOAK) manufacturing environments.

We welcome applicants from a wide range of manufacturing, engineering and industrial sectors who can demonstrate transferable skills in industrialisation, production system design, digital manufacturing or facility planning.
