Job Introduction

Bury College is looking for a Customer Service Assistant to join our team and help provide an excellent experience for everyone who interacts with the College.

As one of the first points of contact for our students, staff, visitors and members of the public, you will play a key role in creating a welcoming and supportive environment. You will provide a responsive and efficient service, helping customers with enquiries, providing information and ensuring they receive the right support.

This is a varied role that combines customer service, administration and day-to-day operational support, so no two days are likely to be the same. With Further Education continually evolving, flexibility and a willingness to adapt are essential.

Key responsibilities

You will:

  • Welcome visitors, students and customers to the College and act as a professional first point of contact.

  • Identify customer needs and take appropriate action to ensure they receive the help and information they require.

  • Respond to initial course enquiries, providing accurate and appropriate advice and information.

  • Open and close reception and customer service areas, ensuring appropriate security and daily checks are completed.

  • Provide administrative and clerical support, including answering telephone calls, dealing with correspondence and handling incoming and outgoing mail.

  • Support the College cash office function, including collecting monies and paying petty cash in accordance with College policies and procedures.

  • Assist learners with the production of ID badges and ensure information held on College systems is accurate.

  • Support the day-to-day operation of staff and visitor car parking arrangements.

  • Assist with the distribution and receipt of materials to and from staff and students.

  • Receive student assignments and ensure they are processed promptly and efficiently.

  • Provide assistance to internal and external auditors when required.

  • Undertake other duties as necessary to support the delivery of a high‑quality, flexible customer service.

About you

We are looking for someone who is friendly, approachable and committed to delivering excellent customer service.

You will be able to:

  • Communicate confidently and professionally with a wide range of people.

  • Listen to customers, understand their needs and provide appropriate support.

  • Remain calm, helpful and professional, including when dealing with challenging or busy situations.

  • Work accurately and efficiently when undertaking administrative tasks.

  • Handle confidential and sensitive information appropriately.

  • Use IT systems confidently and be willing to learn new systems and processes.

  • Work effectively as part of a team while also being able to use your own initiative.

  • Manage competing priorities and respond positively to changing requirements.

  • Demonstrate a commitment to equality, diversity and safeguarding.

  • Maintain high standards of customer care and contribute to continuous improvement.

Previous experience in a customer service, reception, administration or education environment would be beneficial.
