Historic Environment Scotland is seeking a trainer to deliver Scottish Qualification framework for stonemasonry to apprentices and external contractors at the Stirling Skills Training Centre. You will manage on-site assessments, maintain portfolios, ensure safeguarding, and enforce health and safety and QA standards.

The role involves liaising with Qualifications Scotland, CTB, and external partners while supporting CPD and outreach.

Qualifications

• SCQF level 6 Stonemasonry or equivalent is essential.
• Advanced Craft Stonemasonry in Stonemasonry is required.
• Full UK driving licence with willingness to convert to UK licence within 12 months.

Responsibilities

• Deliver and assess stonemasonry training for apprentices and contractors.
• Carry out on-site assessments and maintain work-based portfolios.
• Ensure safeguarding, health and safety, and quality assurance procedures.
• Liaise with Qualifications Scotland and industry partners, representing HES.
• Monitor apprentices in workplace placements and participate in outreach and CPD.

Location: Stirling Skills Training Centre

Working Hours: Monday - Friday, 35 hours per week

Interviews: To be held in person at Stirling Skills Training Centre during the period between the weeks commencing 5 and 12 October 2026

The Technical Education and Training team is charged with developing and supporting traditional building skills throughout Scotland. As part of the training centre team, you will be responsible for supporting and training the next generation of stonemasons and keeping this vital skill required in the care of our historic built environment alive.

Key Responsibilities of this role

• Deliver Scottish Qualification framework of stonemasonry training to apprentices both internal (working for HES) and external (working for external contractors) including the PDA and Qualifications Scotland in stonemasonry qualifications, Advanced Craft and PDA Repair & Maintenance of Traditional Masonry structures.
• Support and deliver training to apprentices whilst they are attending the centre on block release
• Carry out Qualifications Scotland on-site assessments and report writing for work-based portfolios throughout central and south Scotland.
• Ensure the safeguarding of all students at all times.
• Ensure all health and safety requirements and regulations are met.
• Ensure all quality assurance processes and procedures are adhered to.
• Liaise with Qualifications Scotland, Construction Industry Training Board, external contractors, employers, colleges, and other training centres and represent HES on industry discussion forums.
• Monitor and assess apprentices in the workplace and on external placements with contractors, colleges, and training providers throughout Scotland.
• Participate in outreach events, hands on training, seminars, and conferences, as required.
• Undertake mandatory CPD, in line with awarding body requirements, to prove your professional competence. Keep abreast of developments in stonemasonry, the construction industry, health & safety regulation and best practice, Further Education (FE) teaching practices, digital technology and knowledge of the training & heritage sectors.

Essential

• SCQF level 6 Stonemasonry or equivalent
• Advanced Craft Stonemasonry in Stonemasonry
• A full UK driving licence, or a valid non-UK driving licence that permits driving in the UK, with a commitment to convert to a full UK driving licence within 12 months of appointment or before the non-UK licence can no longer be used legally in the UK, whichever is sooner. You will be required to travel to remote sites, and public transport might not be an option in some of these locations.
• Satisfactory completion of Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) assessment. HES will arrange this.
• Achieved or be prepared to work towards the L & D 9 & 11 qualifications. (Qualifications Scotland "Assessor and Internal Verifier" awards).
• Experience of working in the construction/heritage sectors.
• Knowledge of computer packages such as Word and Excel.
