Job summary

Barnsley College is seeking a Course Leader in Public Services to lead designated courses within the Sport, Esport, Public Services & Travel department. You will manage courses, contribute to curriculum planning and deliver high-quality teaching, learning and assessment.

You will drive attendance, retention and progression while supporting learners through an engaging, inclusive experience and contributing to enrichment activities and learner recruitment.

Qualifications

  • Degree or equivalent Level 6 qualification in a relevant field.
  • PGCE, Cert Ed or Level 6 teaching qualification (or willingness to achieve).
  • GCSE English and Maths at Grade C/4 or above (or equivalent).
  • Experience teaching Public Services in FE.
  • Understanding of FE study programmes and curriculum planning.

The Opportunity

Barnsley College is seeking an enthusiastic, experienced and committed Course Leader in Public Services to join our Sport, Esport, Public Services & Travel department.

This is an exciting opportunity to lead and develop Public Services programmes, inspiring learners to achieve their full potential while supporting the continued growth and success of the curriculum area. As a Course Leader, you will be responsible for managing and leading designated courses, contributing to curriculum planning and development, and delivering high-quality teaching, learning and assessment.

Working closely with the Programme Manager, you will play a key role in improving attendance, retention, achievement and progression outcomes while supporting students through an engaging and inclusive learning experience. You will also contribute to course development, quality assurance processes, learner recruitment activities and the planning of enrichment opportunities, trips and visits that enhance the learner journey.

This role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on learners preparing for careers in the Public Services sector while working within a supportive and forward-thinking college environment.

About You

You will be a passionate educator with substantial experience teaching Public Services within Further Education and a strong commitment to learner success. You will possess excellent organisational, communication and leadership skills and be capable of supporting both students and colleagues to achieve high standards.

You will have experience contributing to curriculum development, managing learner performance and using effective teaching, learning and assessment practices to deliver outstanding outcomes. A digital-first approach and a commitment to continuous improvement are essential.

Required
  • Degree or equivalent Level 6 qualification in a relevant field
  • PGCE, Cert Ed or Level 6 teaching qualification (or willingness to achieve within a specified timescale)
  • GCSE English and Mathematics at Grade C/4 or above (or equivalent)
  • Minimum of two years' experience teaching Public Services programmes within Further Education
  • Experience supporting the management of FE programmes
  • Understanding of FE study programmes and curriculum planning processes
  • Ability to improve attendance, retention, achievement and student success rates
  • Experience of teaching, learning and assessment within Further Education
  • Strong understanding of learner support and pastoral needs
  • Ability to analyse and interpret performance data to inform improvements
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to provide constructive and developmental feedback to learners and colleagues
  • Professional, organised and proactive approach to work
