Your Role

We are looking for a developing Costs professional to join our National Costs Team as a Costs Technical Analyst on a 12-month fixed term contract. This role is suited to a Costs Lawyer or Law Costs Draftsman with a solid foundation in costs who is looking to build technical expertise and progress towards a future technical or advocacy role.

and What You’ll Be Doing

You will support colleagues across Irwin Mitchell by providing appropriate legal and tactical guidance on costs matters, working closely with Costs Technical Specialists and the wider Costs Team. This role offers excellent exposure to technical casework, training support and early advocacy experience, with structured development to support progression into a more senior technical position.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Assist with providing technical support to case handlers across the business, responding to costs-related queries and offering guidance where required
  • Support the Costs Technical Specialists and wider Costs Team in delivering CMT Litigation Strategies outcomes through case work and collaboration
  • Keep up to date with developments in Costs case law, market challenges and procedural changes, sharing learning with the team
  • Assist with the preparation of costs training materials to support knowledge development within the Costs Team
  • Contribute to improving the technical capability and consistency of the Costs Team across all locations
  • Assist with costs aspects of claims handling, including evidencing claims, valuing and budgeting, and supporting negotiations
  • Support the recovery of legal fees in civil and commercial costs matters to achieve appropriate outcomes
Work towards achieving individual, team and firm targets

Actively engage in training and development to build technical knowledge and advocacy skills

About You
  • A Costs Lawyer or Law Costs Draftsman with moderate experience and a developing technical understanding of costs law
  • Some experience advising on costs matters from case inception through to conclusion, including Provisional or Detailed Assessment
  • Exposure to costs hearings, either through attendance or shadowing, with an interest in developing advocacy skills
  • Working knowledge of relevant Statute, Civil Procedure Rules and Practice Directions
  • Strong attention to detail and good organisational skills
  • A collaborative approach, with the ability to communicate effectively with colleagues at all levels
  • Motivation and desire to progress into a future technical and advocacy-focused role
  • Willingness to learn, develop and take on increasing responsibility with support and training
