Job summary

Jobtailor is seeking an experienced Costs Lawyer to join its team in Nottingham. The role focuses on high-value Personal Injury Multi Track matters, including Serious Injury, Asbestos and Clinical Negligence.

You will prepare budgets, statements of costs and formal bills of costs, and negotiate terms with opponents. You will attend CMCs and Detailed Assessment hearings, advising PI lawyers and collaborating with leading Counsel.

Qualifications

• Qualified professional in costs law with UK eligibility
• Experience handling High Value Personal Injury Multi Track matters
• Strong proficiency in preparing budgets, statements of costs and bills of costs

Responsibilities

• Manage a diverse caseload of high-value costs matters of significant value
• Handle PI Multi Track cases including Serious Injury, Asbestos, Clinical Negligence
• Prepare Costs Budgets (Precedent H), Statements of Costs (N260s), Estimates and Bills of Costs
• Negotiate costs budgets and bills of costs to settle claims
• Attend Costs CMCs, Detailed Assessment hearings and application hearings
• Advise PI Lawyers and work with Counsel on live claims
• Support team through coaching and guidance as a "Supervision Buddy"
• Lead by example within the costs team

Job description

• Manage a diverse caseload of high-value costs matters of significant value and wider public importance


• Handle PI Multi Track cases, including Serious Injury, Asbestos, Clinical Negligence, and other high-cost matters


• Prepare Costs Budgets (Precedent H), Statements of Costs for Summary Assessment (N260s), Estimates, and Formal Bills of Costs


• Negotiate costs budgets and bills of costs and settle claims for costs on the best possible terms


• Attend Costs CMCs, Detailed Assessment hearings, and application hearings


• Work closely with PI Lawyers as part of the legal team and advise on live claims


• Liaise and work alongside Junior and Leading Counsel on complex and technical costs matters


• Manage all aspects of an individual caseload in line with Costs Department protocols and service standards


• Support colleagues through day-to-day coaching and technical guidance as a \"Supervision Buddy\"


• Lead by example within the specialist national costs team

Requirements

• Experienced Law Costs professional


• Strong written and verbal communication skills


• Persuasive advocacy skills


• Confident negotiation skills


• Professional telephone manner


• Excellent attention to detail


• Strong file management and organisational skills


• Comfortable using standard IT packages such as Outlook and Word


• Experience of Costs Master beneficial


• Qualified Costs Lawyers preferred; applications also welcomed from Chartered Legal Executives and Solicitors


• Significant experience in a wide range of high value Multi Track personal injury matters ideally


• Good understanding of the CPR


• Ability to work independently and contribute effectively within a team
