Job summary

Thompsons Solicitors LLP in Manchester is seeking an experienced Law Costs professional to manage high-value Personal Injury Multi Track costs matters and to prepare budgets, statements of costs, and bills of costs.

You will negotiate terms, attend costs CMCs and Detailed Assessments, collaborate with counsel, and coach colleagues while upholding departmental standards.

Qualifications

• Qualified Costs Lawyers preferred; applications also welcomed from Chartered Legal Executives and Solicitors
• Significant experience in a wide range of high-value Personal Injury matters ideally
• Good understanding of the CPR and strong communication and negotiation skills
• Excellent attention to detail and file management
• Ability to work independently while contributing within a team

Responsibilities

• Manage a diverse caseload of high-value costs matters including PI Multi Track and Clinical Negligence
• Prepare Costs Budgets (Precedent H), Statements of Costs (N260s), Estimates and Formal Bills of Costs
• Negotiate costs budgets and bills and settle claims on favorable terms
• Attend Costs CMCs, Detailed Assessment hearings and application hearings
• Collaborate with PI Lawyers and Counsel on complex costs issues and supervise juniors

Job description

Manage a diverse caseload of high-value costs matters, including PI Multi Track, Serious Injury, Asbestos, Clinical Negligence, and other high-cost matters
Prepare Costs Budgets (Precedent H), Statements of Costs for Summary Assessment (N260s), Estimates, and Formal Bills of Costs
Negotiate costs budgets and bills of costs and settle claims on the best possible terms
Attend Costs CMCs, Detailed Assessment hearings, and application hearings
Work closely with PI Lawyers as part of the legal team and advise on live claims
Liaise and work alongside Junior and Leading Counsel on complex and technical costs matters
Manage own caseload in line with Costs Department protocols and service standards
Support colleagues by providing day-to-day coaching and technical guidance as a "Supervision Buddy"
Contribute to Thompsons Solicitors LLP's national Costs Department and specialist costs teams

Requirements

• Experienced Law Costs professional
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Persuasive advocacy and confident negotiation skills
• Professional telephone manner
• Excellent attention to detail
• Strong file management and organisational skills
• Comfortable using standard IT packages such as Outlook and Word
• Experience of Costs Master beneficial
• Qualified Costs Lawyers preferred; applications also welcomed from Chartered Legal Executives and Solicitors
