Job summary

Jobtailor is seeking a skilled costs professional to manage high-value Personal Injury and Clinical Negligence costs matters in the Cardiff area. The role involves budgeting, drafting statements, and negotiating bills to secure favorable settlements.

You will work closely with PI lawyers and counsel, manage a demanding caseload, and provide technical guidance within the Costs Department, upholding our service standards.

Responsibilities

• Manage a diverse caseload of high-value costs matters (PI Multi Track, serious injury, asbestos, clinical negligence).
• Prepare costs budgets (Precedent H), statements of costs (N260s), estimates, and formal bills of costs.
• Negotiate costs budgets and bills; settle claims on favorable terms.
• Attend Costs CMCs, Detailed Assessment hearings, and application hearings.
• Collaborate with PI lawyers and advise on live claims.
• Liaise with junior and leading counsel on complex costs matters.
• Manage own caseload per departmental protocols and service standards.
• Provide day-to-day coaching and guidance as a supervision buddy.

Job description

• Manage a diverse caseload of high-value costs matters, including PI Multi Track, Serious Injury, Asbestos, Clinical Negligence, and other high-cost matters
• Prepare Costs Budgets (Precedent H), Statements of Costs for Summary Assessment (N260s), Estimates, and Formal Bills of Costs
• Negotiate costs budgets and bills of costs and settle claims on the best possible terms
• Attend Costs CMCs, Detailed Assessment hearings, and application hearings
• Work closely with PI Lawyers as part of the legal team and advise on live claims
• Liaise and work alongside Junior and Leading Counsel on complex and technical costs matters
• Manage own caseload in line with Costs Department protocols and service standards
• Support colleagues through day-to-day coaching and technical guidance as a “Supervision Buddy”

Requirements

• Experienced Law Costs professional
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Persuasive advocacy and confident negotiation skills
• Professional telephone manner
• Excellent attention to detail
• Strong file management and organisational skills
• Comfortable using standard IT packages such as Outlook and Word
• Experience of Costs Master beneficial
• Qualified Costs Lawyers preferred; applications also welcomed from Chartered Legal Executives and Solicitors
• Significant experience in a wide range of high-value Multi Track personal injury matters ideally
• Good understanding of the CPR
• Ability to work independently and contribute effectively within a team
