Job summary

DS Smith is seeking a Focus Improvement Technician for the Corrugator at the Burscough site. You will maintain and improve high-speed corrugating lines, starch systems and boiler-related equipment, working with Production and Maintenance to maximise uptime and quality.

The role requires strong mechanical/electrical experience, reading drawings, and a proactive approach to root-cause analysis and reliability improvements.

Qualifications

• Qualified engineering apprenticeship or NVQ Level 3/4 in Mechanical, Electrical or Maintenance Engineering.
• Experience maintaining high-speed heavy industrial machinery in corrugating, paper, packaging or continuous processes.
• Ability to read mechanical drawings, schematics and electrical wiring diagrams.
• Experience diagnosing faults and using root-cause analysis.

Responsibilities

• Deliver planned, preventative and corrective maintenance across your designated production area.
• Act as the technical subject matter expert for assigned equipment and assets.
• Diagnose and resolve mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic and steam-system faults quickly and effectively.
• Support reliable operation of high-speed corrugating equipment and related systems.
• Carry out precision alignment, calibration and installation of heavy machinery and corrugating rolls.
• Maintain and troubleshoot starch preparation, pumping, piping and adhesive application systems.
• Test and troubleshoot PLCs, sensors, drives and automated control systems.
• Identify and eliminate chronic equipment losses and recurring failures.
• Use root-cause analysis to identify underlying issues and implement corrective actions.
• Carry out predictive maintenance activities including vibration analysis and thermal imaging.
• Review and improve maintenance routines to increase asset reliability.
• Record maintenance activities in CMMS and work with Production teams to minimise disruption.
