Job summary

Adecco is hiring a Controls Engineer in Gateshead to design, develop and deliver advanced control systems for power distribution applications. You will program PLCs, HMIs and SCADA, configure automation equipment, and produce technical documentation while working closely with design, production and commissioning teams.

The role involves on-site testing, on-site commissioning support, and resolving issues throughout project delivery within a supportive engineering environment.

Qualifications

  • HNC/HND or degree in Electrical, Electronic, Control Systems, or Automation Engineering or equivalent.
  • Experience in controls, PLC, systems or automation engineering roles.
  • Ability to interpret electrical drawings and schematics.
  • Knowledge of industrial communication protocols and fault-finding.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop control systems for power generation and distribution.
  • Programme PLC, HMI and SCADA systems.
  • Configure and integrate control equipment and automation systems.
  • Produce I/O schedules, control philosophies and functional specs.
  • Review electrical drawings and wiring diagrams.
  • Support system integration using Modbus, Profinet and Ethernet/IP.
  • Test, commission on-site and troubleshoot project delivery.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams for project success.
  • Provide technical support to customers and stakeholders.

The Role

As a Controls Engineer, you will play a crucial role in the design, development, and delivery of innovative control systems. Collaborating closely with design, production, commissioning, and project teams, you will help provide high-quality solutions for a variety of complex engineering applications.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Design and develop control systems for power generation and distribution applications
  • Programme PLC, HMI, and SCADA systems
  • Configure and integrate control equipment and automation systems
  • Produce and review technical documentation, including I/O schedules, control philosophies, and functional specifications
  • Interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and panel layouts
  • Support system integration using industrial communication protocols such as Modbus, Profinet, and Ethernet/IP
  • Carry out testing activities and support commissioning on-site when required
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues throughout project delivery
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure successful project completion
  • Provide technical support to customers and internal stakeholders
What We're Looking For:
  • HNC/HND, Degree, or equivalent experience in Electrical, Electronic, Control Systems, or Automation Engineering
  • Previous experience in a Controls, PLC, Systems, or Automation Engineering role
  • Strong understanding of electrical control systems within an industrial environment
  • Experience with Rockwell, Schneider, or similar PLC platforms
  • HMI and/or SCADA development experience
  • Ability to interpret electrical drawings and schematics
  • Knowledge of industrial communication protocols
  • Strong problem-solving and fault-finding skills
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities
Desirable Experience:
  • Power generation, energy, or power distribution experience
  • Generator control and load management systems
  • Control and protection systems
  • AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, or similar software
  • Previous commissioning experience
  • 18th Edition qualification
