Job summary

National Grid in the UK is recruiting a Control & Cyber Lifecycle Engineer to transform how we manage substation automation, protection and OT cyber security. The role can be based from Warwick, Leeds, London, Bristol or Derby and offers a flexible hybrid working model.

You will develop engineering standards, asset strategies and roadmaps, support lifecycle management of assets, and provide technical advice to project teams while collaborating across disciplines.

Qualifications

  • A degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Control Systems, Cyber Security, or a related discipline, or equivalent industry experience.
  • Experience working within electricity transmission, distribution, or critical infrastructure environments (e.g. water, gas, rail).
  • Membership of, or a desire to work towards membership of, a relevant professional institution.
  • Experience in one or both of the following areas: Protection and Control Engineering; Operational Technology (OT) Cyber Security, including knowledge of OT cyber security standards and frameworks such as IEC 62443 and IEC 62351.
  • An understanding of engineering asset management and lifecycle principles.
  • The ability to analyse technical information and make evidence-based recommendations.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • A proactive approach to learning, continuous improvement, and collaborative working.

Responsibilities

  • Support the lifecycle management of substation control, protection and OT cyber assets.

  • Work with internal stakeholders, suppliers and industry partners to identify and assess new technologies and solutions.
  • Support technical assurance and Type Registration activities for new and existing asset types.

  • Analyse asset performance, risk and lifecycle information to support investment and replacement decisions.
  • Support the delivery of cyber security requirements within operational technology environments.
  • Contribute to digital substation and network modernisation initiatives.
  • Provide technical advice and support to engineering, project and operational teams.
  • Build strong relationships across the business and share knowledge with colleagues and stakeholders.

Job Purpose

National Grid is transforming the way we manage control systems and cyber security across our transmission network.

As a Control & Cyber Lifecycle Engineer, you'll help shape the future of substation automation, protection and control systems, and operational technology (OT) cyber security. Working within the Control & Cyber Lifecycle team, you'll support the development of technical standards, asset strategies and future technology roadmaps that ensure our network remains safe, secure and resilient.

This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer with experience in either Protection & Control or OT Cyber Security who is looking to broaden their expertise and develop a deeper understanding of both disciplines.

What you’ll do

About you

We're looking for a motivated engineer who enjoys solving technical problems, influencing future engineering decisions, and working collaboratively across multiple disciplines.

You will have:

  • A degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Control Systems, Cyber Security, or a related discipline, or equivalent industry experience.
  • Experience working within electricity transmission, distribution, or critical infrastructure environments (e.g. water, gas, rail).
  • Membership of, or a desire to work towards membership of, a relevant professional institution.
  • Experience in one or both of the following areas:
  • Protection and Control Engineering.
  • Operational Technology (OT) Cyber Security, including knowledge of OT cyber security standards and frameworks such as IEC 62443 and IEC 62351.

Experience in one or more of the following areas would be advantageous:

  • Knowledge of substation automation and digital substation technologies, including IEC 61850.
  • Experience of Operational Technology (OT), Industrial Control Systems (ICS), or SCADA environments.
  • Asset lifecycle management within a regulated industry.
  • Technology assurance, equipment qualification, or Type Registration processes.
  • HVDC, FACTS, or other advanced power system technologies.
  • Data-driven asset management and performance analysis.

We recognise that candidates may come from either a Protection & Control background or an OT Cyber Security background. We do not expect applicants to be specialists in both disciplines from day one.
