Job summary

Cabot Corporation is seeking a Control and Instrumentation Engineer based in Barry, South Wales. This role involves overseeing all onsite OT and IT systems to ensure safe and compliant operations. Job description

Control and Instrumentation Engineer at Cabot Carbon Ltd, based in Barry, South Wales.

Responsibilities
  • Act as the site subject matter expert and owner for all onsite OT and IT systems, ensuring procedural, legal and regulatory compliance and safe operation.
  • Support local IT equipment users and act as interface between the site and shared service centre.
  • Collaborate with site and corporate staff to develop and implement projects, budgets and contracts, and monitor system and service performance.
  • Promote safety as the number one priority; provide leadership to encourage a safety‑first environment at all times and take actions that demonstrate continuous improvement in health, safety, process safety and environmental protection.
  • Support Root‑Cause Analysis (RCA) activities into plant performance deviations, leading and supporting teams throughout the entire process.
  • Use Management of Change (MOC) techniques to ensure that potential plant or process changes receive appropriate review and are managed through to final handover.
  • Act as subject‑matter expert and lead point of contact for site IT and OT systems and infrastructure, performing regular scheduled maintenance, diagnosing systems issues, and implementing corrective actions or fixes to software and hardware.
  • Implement programming changes to DCS/PLC systems as required, utilizing MOC procedures and ensuring appropriate commissioning checks before and after changes to live plant equipment.
  • Ensure site compliance with applicable legal, corporate and local standards, owning and managing relevant site standards including alarm management, functional safety, Safety Instrumented Systems (SIL), overrides, IEC61511 and cybersecurity.
  • Provide leadership and support for the implementation and ongoing management of site functional safety systems (DCS trip architecture, SIL, interlocks).
  • Own and manage the site IT/OT infrastructure (e.g. DCS I/O, controllers, gateways, servers, data‑historian, CCTV, and data backup control).
  • Support the Engineering Manager in controlling and setting site budgets for IT software, IT hardware and DCS/PLC maintenance activities.
  • Support Engineering and Production Managers to manage the site knowledge‑base on IT/OT operations and close out training needs within the teams.
  • Participate in the development of IT strategies, policies, standards and systems while ensuring compliance with Global IT Standards and Work Practices.
  • Coordinate the tracking and closure of IT‑related issues as a link between the shared‑service centre and the site.
  • Link global teams and the Barry site to ensure alignment on key strategies, projects and standards for IT and OT systems.
  • Provide project management and support for the site capital projects portfolio, acting as owner and SME for changes that apply to the site IT/OT functions.
  • Raise work orders and purchase orders as necessary.
  • Take responsibility for any other reasonable duties as required.
Qualifications
  • Advanced knowledge of DCS, PLC and data historian hardware, infrastructure and software, including design, commissioning, programming, maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with DeltaV virtualised systems – Hyper‑V and VMware, including failover and replication.
  • Knowledge of ladder logic and ability to perform first‑line maintenance on PLC systems.
  • Ability to interrogate relevant data stored in site systems to aid troubleshooting.
  • Applied knowledge of cybersecurity protocols and management systems.
  • Excellent critical reasoning skills and experience using problem‑solving techniques (e.g. Kepner‑Tregoe, Six Sigma, 5‑Why tools).
  • Advanced knowledge of office IT hardware, software and networks.
  • BSc degree – Chemical Engineering, Process Control Systems or Instrumentation & Electronics.
  • Experienced in Emerson DeltaV DCS system software and hardware architecture.
  • Experience in a variety of PLC architectures, such as Siemens, SCADA, Allen‑Bradley.
  • Certified in functional safety 61511/61508 – Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) for the process industry sector.
  • Experience operating advanced control, supervisory and data management systems in a process industry setting.
  • Detailed knowledge of manufacturing control and reporting systems, instrumentation, Microsoft Windows, office applications and security concepts.
  • Demonstrable track record as a user/programmer of distributed process control systems.
  • Business awareness and familiarity with cost/benefit analysis‑based decision‑making.
  • Knowledgeable of safety tools such as risk assessment.
  • Experience working on an operating chemical manufacturing facility is desirable.
  • Fluent in English.
