Consultant Stroke Physician

Applications are invited for a full-time Consultant in Stroke Medicine with a maintained interest in a parent specialty if desired.

We are recognised as one of the leading NHS Foundation Trusts in the UK, providing services to nearly 700,000 adult patients every year. The Trust is a regional centre for cancer, trauma, burns& plastics and has the largest solid organ transplantation programme in Europe.

It is one of the most - consistently high performing trusts in the NHS and has been rated excellent for both financial management and for quality of clinical and non-clinical services by the Care Quality Commission.

The Trust provides traditional secondary care services to the South, Central and East Birmingham catchment area. Specialist tertiary care is provided across the West Midlands and a proportion of the Trusts activity is provided to patients who are referred from outside the region.

Stroke Medicine has reconfigured in the region and UHB is now one of the largest units in the country with approximately 1600 stroke admissions a year coming through the HASU at the new Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. It is an active thrombolysis centre with good research links and a thrombectomy service for acute ischaemic stroke. The post may include shared care of the stroke rehabilitation ward at Moseley Hall Hospital or work in the Acute Stroke Unit at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital

Main duties of the job

Applicants should be on the GMC specialist register or be eligible within six months, together with an MRCP or equivalent and have experience in stroke medicine and thrombolysis/thrombectomy.

The Divisional Director, Dr Khaled Elfandi and the Clinical Service Lead for Stroke Medicine, Dr Don Sims, will be pleased to discuss the post further, and the interactions with Stroke Medicine and other parent specialties if needed.

Duties of the post-this appointment is to the Department of Stroke Medicine at UHSB. Duties will include but not exclusively:

*Shared ward round duties of the HASU on ward 514 at QEHB (7 day working)

*Shared care of ASU patients in BHH

*Shared care of in-patients on Ward 8 Moseley Hall Hospital (depending on parent specialty interest)

*Weekly TIA clinic at BHH/Solihull Hospital

*Participation in the on call rota for thrombolysis / mechanical thrombectomy

*Associated clinical administration.

*Participation in audit and clinical governance activities including monthly Departmental Meeting.

*Educational supervision of junior staff. At Moseley Hall this will be supervision of a GPVTS trainee and on ASU at BHH, shared equitably with the other consultants.

*Participation in the running of the service.

*Supervision of the band 7 Stroke nurse specialists whilst on call

Job responsibilities

EXPERIENCE & KNOWLEDGE

*Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required to gain UK CCT in General & Geriatric Medicine or Neurology or Acute Medicine

*Appropriate experience in Stroke Medicine & delivery of Thrombolysis.

*Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.

*An understanding of the requirements of Clinical Governance and Audit.

*Knowledge & understanding of role of ethical committee

*Ability to develop clinical specialities

SKILLS & ABILITY

*Ability to organise and manage outpatient/inpatient priorities in accordance with Trust requirements

*Ability and willingness to work within the Trust and NHS performance framework and targets

*Experience of audit management

*Knowledge of Complaints; ethical issues and Clinical Governance

*Prompt & timely responsiveness to Management agenda

*Ability to synthesise and prioritise complex and conflicting information

OTHER SPECIFIC REQUIREMENT

*Understanding of Training system and active participation in training structures/trainee supervision

*Experience of teaching medical students

*Ability to teach clinical skills

*Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems

*Publications in peer-reviewed journals

*Ability to work effectively in a team & with colleagues from a wide range of professional and organisational backgrounds

*Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills

*Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, GPs, nurses and other agencies

*Ability to understand patient and carer/family requirements

*Ability to persuade and influence

*Good presentational skills including complex clinical & managerial information to a wide range of audiences

*Ability to maintain composure and set high standards of behaviour when under pressure

*Enquiring, critical approach to work

  • Entry on GMC Specialist Register; eligible for entry on Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCT) at time of interview
