Job description

Purpose & Scope of the Role

Tetra Tech is a leading global provider of consulting and engineering services. Our Groundwater & Geothermal Team forms part of a wider geo-environmental and mining business and delivers projects for public and private sector clients across the UK and Ireland. Our work spans the water, energy, infrastructure, defence, environmental management and property sectors.

Due to continued growth, we are looking for an ambitious hydrogeologist with relevant experience to join the team. You will work across a varied portfolio of groundwater and geothermal projects, including groundwater resources, dewatering, contaminant hydrogeology, monitoring, borehole investigations, hydrogeological risk assessment and geothermal development.

The appointment may be made at Consultant or Senior Hydrogeologist grade, depending on your experience. At Senior grade, we would expect you to demonstrate greater independence in managing defined work packages or smaller projects, acting as a day-to-day client contact and reviewing the work of less experienced colleagues.

Your Impact in this position

Reporting to a Principal or Associate member of the Groundwater & Geothermal Team, you will contribute to the technical and commercial delivery of projects from initial scoping through field investigation, assessment and reporting. You’ll work across a varied portfolio including groundwater resources, dewatering, contaminant hydrogeology, monitoring, borehole investigations, hydrogeological risk assessment and geothermal development.

You will be encouraged to develop your project management, client relationship, and leadership skills within a supportive, growing consultancy environment.

The role will combine office-based technical work with site activities. You will collaborate with colleagues across the wider geo-environmental business and with other disciplines and will have opportunities to support projects throughout Great Britain and Ireland, as well as selected international assignments.

5 Core Capabilities
  • Technical delivery: Plan, design, procure, supervise and manage groundwater and geothermal investigations, desk studies, technical assessments, conceptual site models and risk assessments.
  • Field leadership: Carry out and supervise field activities such as groundwater monitoring, water features surveys, borehole drilling and installation, pumping tests, groundwater sampling and other hydrogeological testing.
  • Analysis and reporting: Collate, quality-check, analyse and interpret groundwater, flow, water quality and site investigation data, then produce clear reports, notes, drawings and presentations.
  • Digital and regulatory support: Use GIS and digital tools, and support abstraction, discharge, dewatering and other permit or licence applications.
  • Client and project support: Help manage project set up, budgets, programmes, resources, subcontractors, change control and fee proposals, while supporting clients and junior colleagues. Contribute to tenders, fee proposals, bids and business development activities
Training, Qualifications & Experience

You’ll have a good honours degree in geology, earth science, engineering geology, environmental science or a related discipline, plus relevant hydrogeology or groundwater experience. You’ll bring practical fieldwork and investigation experience, strong data analysis and report writing skills, and a developing understanding of UK and/or Irish groundwater regulation and licensing. Good Microsoft Word, Excel and GIS skills are important, along with strong organisation, communication and time management. A full driving licence and willingness to travel are required.

Desirable experience includes groundwater resources, dewatering, contaminant hydrogeology, geothermal, hydrogeological risk assessment, borehole supervision, pumping test analysis, MODFLOW, hydrochemistry, permit/licence applications, fee proposals, subcontractor management, and working towards chartership or UK security clearance.

Working Environment

This role combines office-based and site work, with hybrid and flexible working available. You should expect travel across Great Britain and Ireland, with occasional short periods away from your base office.
