Lorn and the Islands Hospital is a Rural General Hospital, situated in Oban on the west coast of Scotland - one of the most beautiful areas of Scotland. We are developing a new model for the delivery of medical services, linked with colleagues in NHS Glasgow and Clyde and North Highland. This is a uniquely Oban-focused project, with parallels to successful rural healthcare models in Scotland, such as Caithness General in Wick. This role offers an excellent opportunity to be involved in shaping clinical change.

We seek an enthusiastic, visionary consultant physician to join our team, with the option to fulfill the Lead Physician role. This is a consultant-led service emphasizing high-quality healthcare and work-life balance. You will deliver high-quality care to the local population without the pressures of ambulance queues or waiting rooms. Working with a dedicated team, you will see patients through their entire hospital journey, making a real difference. You will collaborate with junior doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals.

Rural Emergency Physicians, typically senior doctors on the specialist register from GP or ED backgrounds, help ensure the safety and smooth operation of the hospital's front door and support training and supervision of junior doctors, reducing the time commitment for Consultant Physicians.

Lorn & Islands Hospital, located on the outskirts of Oban, provides acute and community services, including 24-hour medical, surgical, and anesthetic services, as well as radiology. Consultants also run outpatient clinics across Argyll, including on the island of Mull.

The area is of outstanding natural beauty. Oban is a tourist and commercial hub with ferry links to Mull, Iona, Islay, Coll, Tiree, Colonsay, and Lismore. Leisure activities include yachting, canoeing, walking, climbing, cycling, and fishing. The region has a vibrant music and dance culture. It is ideal for families, with good schools and affordable property. Oban offers a high quality of life in a rural setting, with Inverness, Glasgow, Stirling, and Perth accessible within 2-3 hours.

This vacancy is for 10 Programmed Activities per week, with an on-call supplement of 1:4. Up to 2 additional PAs may be negotiated. Part-time applications are welcome. Applicants are encouraged to visit the hospital and area.

For an informal chat, contact:

Dr Emma Beveridge, Consultant Radiologist [emailprotected], Interim Clinical Lead, Lorn & Islands Hospital, or

Job reference: 218014

Closing date: Midnight Wednesday 9th July 2025

NHS Scotland promotes equality and diversity, aiming for a workforce that is representative and respectful. Applications from all sections of society are welcomed.
