Job description

Locum Consultant Physician in Palliative Medicine
Based in Perth, Cornhill Macmillan Centre, Perth Royal Infirmary
5.5 PAs (with on-call)

Starting date 1st April for 3-6 months

Applications are invited for a Locum Consultant in Palliative Medicine to join the Tayside Palliative Care Team. This is based at Cornhill Macmillan Centre, Perth Royal Infirmary, Perth.

This post represents an exciting opportunity to work in the specialist palliative care unit with input when possible to the acute hospital setting and community facing services. Teams for all three settings are based in Cornhill Macmillan Centre and form part of a multidisciplinary team.

Tayside Specialist Palliative Care Service

NHS Tayside serves a population of approximately 415,000 people over the local councils of Perth and Kinross (151,000), Dundee (148,000) and Angus (116,000). It also accommodates patients from North East Fife (74,000). It is a large geographical area with its population scattered over an area of approximately 100 miles by 80 miles. Tayside Specialist Palliative Care Service aims to provide quality care appropriate to location [home, palliative care unit, nursing home or hospital] and level of complexity. Education and telephone advice for all health professionals are core activities of the service.

Cornhill Macmillan Centre

Cornhill Macmillan Centre is a 10-bed purpose built NHS palliative care unit in the grounds of Perth Royal Infirmary, Perth. It has an experienced Multidisciplinary Team and serves as a base for the hospital palliative care team (HPCT) and the community facing team. There are strong links with Dundee Medical School with delivery of undergraduate education and a variety of post-graduate education events organised and delivered for Foundation doctors, GP trainees, Specialty Trainees and other Health and Social Care professionals across NHS Tayside.

The successful applicant will work closely with the other consultants, three specialty doctors and the wider multidisciplinary team. The successful applicant will also work collaboratively with the other members of the Tayside Specialist Palliative Care Service including five other consultants. The post will include sharing the medical leadership for the in-patient unit with some cross cover for the Hospital Palliative Care Team and support for the Community Team. On call for weekends and weeknights covers all of Tayside (Specialist Palliative Care in patient units, acute hospitals and communities), is third on call, is non-resident and is remunerated by 0.7 PA plus a 5% availability supplement. Frequency is 1:7 weekends and week nights.

Applicants must be fully registered with the General Medical Council and have CCT or CESR in Palliative Medicine.
